The right timing is crucial when frying sunflower seeds, and Shu Yu had previously let Luo Chun try it out. Seeing him handling things carefully and thoughtfully, she entrusted him with the task.
There weren't many sunflower seeds in the first batch, so they decided to give it a try for now.
With the sunflower seeds already cooked, everyone was busy taking them to a ventilated area for natural air-drying. With nothing much to do at the moment, Shu Yu turned and headed towards the oil mill.
The process of extracting oil involved more steps and was more laborious than frying sunflower seeds. Therefore, there were more people working at the oil mill, mostly strong laborers who received higher wages than those at the sunflower seed workshop.
Of course, oil itself was more expensive than roasted seeds.
The oil mill's equipment was made by Lu Erbai and was currently placed inside the mill.
The oil-bearing sunflowers matured earlier than the edible sunflowers, and they had been harvested about a month ago, just in time for the oil extraction.
When Shu Yu entered the oil mill, Da Niu was stirring the seeds with his team before crushing them once a faint fragrance spread out.
Being the first time they were extracting oil, they were naturally cautious.
Shu Yu didn't interfere much; after glancing at them, she saw that the workers were a bit nervous, so she simply left.
She went to the lodging area where three or four women were already preparing lunch.
These women were not among the workers of the forty or so people; they were the tenants living beside the estate, including Guo Shi.
Not only them, but there were also a few gatekeepers who were selected from these tenants.
Seeing them working methodically, Shu Yu felt relieved.
Not long after, someone hurriedly ran over and excitedly said, "Master, the sunflower seeds are fried, and they smell great!"
"Is that so?" Shu Yu walked towards the sunflower seed workshop, where a pot of fried seeds was placed on the table. Luo Chun and others were gathered around, looking at them.
Shu Yu came over and tasted one. They were indeed fragrant, with just the right amount of heat and no burnt taste, perfectly crispy.
Seeing everyone nervously looking at her, Shu Yu clapped her hands and said, "Not bad, continue with this method. Try to add the ingredients little by little, but not too much. We're just starting, take it slow."
"Yes!" Everyone nodded happily.
Shu Yu pushed the plate of sunflower seeds forward and said, "Come on, try some."
This was a rare treat, and none of them had eaten it before. Only Luo Chun had tasted a few seeds while they were frying.
At this moment, they couldn't help but look at each other, and cautiously, one person picked up a seed and said, "It smells so good."
After eating one seed, they wanted more, but they all restrained themselves and put down their hands.
Seeing Luo Chun already organizing everyone to prepare for the next batch, Shu Yu picked up a couple of handfuls and left.
Not long after, someone from the oil mill ran over, excitedly saying to her, "Master, we've got oil! We've got oil! These sunflower seeds can really produce oil."
Shu Yu's lips twitched. So, before seeing the oil, they didn't believe it, huh?
But hearing about the oil, Shu Yu couldn't help but get excited too.
She quickly walked to the oil mill, where Da Niu was happily holding a small bowl and walking towards her. "A Yu, take a look!"
"Is the oil yield good?"
"We don't know yet; we'll see after we finish extracting what we have."
With both workshops now producing finished products, Shu Yu and Da Niu breathed a sigh of relief and exchanged glances.
In the following days, Shu Yu stayed at the estate.
The oil yield from the sunflower seeds was good, and sunflower oil was known for its health benefits and high nutritional value.
After frying two bags of melon seeds and filling two large cans with sunflower oil, Shu Yu carried these two products back to the county town.
