Hou Shi considered it for a whole night before agreeing to go.
As a convicted criminal with a low status, following a high-ranking official to the capital to become a concubine, she had no reason to refuse. Even if she didn't think for herself, she had to think for her daughter's sake.
Grandma Lu found it strange, "But she was exiled to the Linzhang Prefecture. If she follows Master Wan like this, wouldn't people say that Master Wan is abusing his power to violate the law?"
Shu Yu smiled, "It's not that simple. Although Hou Shi was exiled, she is the concubine of Second Master Shu. Moreover, she is not a high-ranking concubine and can be considered equivalent to a servant in the Shu family. If Second Master Shu sold her, it would be normal."
"So, Second Master Shu sold Hou Shi to Master Wan?" Old Madam Lu exclaimed.
Shu Yu nodded, "Aunt Hou said that after we left, life in the Shu family became even more difficult. The main and second branches had a complete falling-out. Second Master Shu is someone who doesn't handle anything and only knows how to eat and wait for death. He has no vision or ability. At least the main branch has Shu Feng, who has been groomed as the heir of the Shu family since childhood."
With the two branches fighting, life in the main branch wasn't too good, but Shu Feng had authority, and the entire family listened to him. They could barely eat and live on.
The second branch was different. Second Master Shu thought of himself as an elder and wanted to be lazy secretly, making his wives, children, and concubines serve him. But with everyone exiled, they were already living a miserable life. They originally hoped that Second Master Shu, as the head of the family, would come and make decisions for them to live a better life. As a result, he made things worse.
Second Master Shu wanted to act like an elder, while Shu Quan wanted to be the main of the second branch, causing a huge conflict between the father and son. Second Madam Shu was caught in the middle and found it difficult to handle. The family was constantly in turmoil, and no one seriously worked.
Finally, Second Master Shu was the one who suffered. He was getting older, and Second Madam Shu cared more about her son. As a result, Shu Quan became the one in charge of the second branch.
Of course, Shu Quan wouldn't let Second Master Shu be lazy. Not only that, as a man, he had to work harder than Second Madam Shu and others.
According to the principle of remuneration according to work, those who did more got more.
Second Master Shu's life became extremely difficult, and his wives, concubines, and children all ignored him.
Therefore, when Master Wan came looking for him, Second Master Shu felt that he had hope.
At first, he wanted to bargain and demanded something from Master Wan in exchange for Hou Shi. He even proposed an outrageous condition of being taken away from the place of exile and released without guilt.
Master Wan had been an official for many years and wasn't threatened by someone like him.
He simply stated his conditions: First, give him an easier job. Second, inform the person in charge of Zhengdao Village to take care of him. Third, give him twenty taels of silver as payment for Hou Shi.
He agreed if he agreed, and it didn't matter if he didn't.
In any case, he couldn't see Hou Shi after she was taken away by Master Wan, nor could he benefit from her and her daughter.
With no other choice, Second Master Shu gritted his teeth and agreed to Lord Wan's demands.
Dealing with someone like Second Master Shu didn't require much effort; the hardships of life had already crushed him.
And so, Hou Shi became Master Wan's concubine and left with him.
Grandma Lu sighed, "In the past, I always felt that selling concubines was highly unreasonable. Those concubines served the big lords like husbands and wives, and there should be some emotional attachment, right? To sell them so easily was simply inhumane. But in the case of Hou Shi, I can't help but be glad that selling concubines might not be a bad thing after all."
