Shu Yu and the others arrived at the bamboo forest halfway up the mountain, where they were once again stopped by guards.
However, it seemed that the black market had mostly moved out, and there were only two guards here on the mountainside.
Knowing Meng Yunzheng's identity, the two guards exchanged a glance, and one of them stayed behind while the other nodded to Shu Yu and her companions. "Please follow me."
As they walked through the somewhat familiar path, Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng couldn't help but observe the surroundings.
During these past few months, with no more transactions happening in the black market, it appeared desolate.
There were still some marks of cart tracks on the ground, most likely left behind during the transportation of goods.
Soon, they arrived at the entrance of the estate, and compared to their last visit, it looked even more deserted.
A few servants were still moving around in the estate, almost without making any noise.
Shu Yu and her companions were quickly led to the main hall, and not long after, the manager of the black market appeared.
It was the same capable middle-aged man Shu Yu had met when she sold mirrors, Master Guo, the manager.
When Mister Guo saw them, he hesitated for a moment, and his expression showed a brief hint of unease.
Although he quickly concealed this emotion, both Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng were astute and immediately noticed it.
They exchanged a glance, sensing something strange about Master Guo's expression.
Guo quickly smiled and invited them to sit. "Please have some tea."
Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng sat down, and after exchanging introductions, Meng Yunzheng didn't beat around the bush and directly asked, "Master Guo, I heard that both the estate and the mountain are up for sale. I'm interested in buying them. Can you tell me the price?"
Master Guo listened to him and smiled, waving his hand, "I'm delighted that Master Meng has taken an interest in the estate and the mountain. However, I'm afraid you're a bit late. The estate has already been sold."
Both Meng Yunzheng and Shu Yu were taken aback.
Sold?
No, Meng Yunzheng had just returned from the capital in the morning, and at that time, the estate hadn't been sold yet.
He had come here in such a timely manner; how could it have been sold already?
Meng Yunzheng pursed his lips and asked, "Can you tell me to whom the estate was sold?"
Master Guo shook his head, "I'm sorry, but I can't disclose that information."
Meng Yunzheng fell silent for a moment and then helplessly turned to Shu Yu. "I wanted to be neighbors with your estate, but it seems impossible now. The estate has already been bought by someone else. We can't force it. Before coming, I was thinking that I don't have much money, and I might need to borrow some, but now it seems unnecessary."
Shu Yu understood the unsaid meaning behind his words.
And she knew that Meng Yunzheng had enough money.
Clearly, he hadn't given up on the idea of buying the estate.
Shu Yu snorted lightly, "It's all because you came back too late. If you had arrived a few days earlier, maybe you could have bought it."
Meng Yunzheng apologized helplessly, "I was in the wrong."
"Forget it, I'm not that unreasonable. It doesn't matter who buys the estate as long as it doesn't affect my property."
As she spoke, Shu Yu suddenly frowned and looked at Guo, "Master Guo, I heard that there's an owner of a Qinlou Chu Pavilion in the capital who also wants to buy your estate. You won't sell it to them, right?"
Master Guo's gaze flickered slightly, and he smiled, "I'm sorry, but I can't reveal that."
