Tang Wenqian lay with his back to his mother. His voice was low, "Mother, I'm a bit tired and want to rest. You and Father can have the chicken soup."
Tang Wenqian's mother pursed her lips, "Are you very tired today? Is the work at the yamen too busy?"
"Mhm." Tang Wenqian seemed reluctant to say more.
Tang Wenqian's mother furrowed her brows, sensing that something was off with her son. Normally, he was gentle and patient, but today, he seemed different.
After hesitating for a moment, she asked hesitantly, "I heard that the County Magistrate went to act as a matchmaker for the Lu family's daughter yesterday. Did you arrange it?"
Tang Wenqian's body suddenly stiffened, and he turned around. "Mother, that's the County Magistrate's business. It's better not to inquire about it."
Tang Wenqian's mother confirmed her suspicion and stared at her son in astonishment.
After a while, she swallowed and asked, "Wenqian, just tell me honestly. Did you, did you take a liking to the Lu family's daughter?"
Tang Wenqian sat up straight and tightly knitted his brows. "Mother, you shouldn't spread rumors. Village lord is already engaged, and if this news gets out, it will damage not only me but also village lord and even Mister Meng's reputation."
"But, but you…" Tang Wenqian's mother hesitated.
"Mother, I'm really tired. I want to sleep. You should have the chicken soup first." Tang Wenqian gently pushed his mother out of the room, closed the door, and sat back on the bed.
However, he wasn't tired at all; he just stared blankly at the window.
Did he take a liking to Shu Yu?
Tang Wenqian admitted that the first time he saw the second daughter of the Lu family, he thought she was a vibrant and energetic girl.
Later, when she carried an axe to her maternal grandmother's house and angrily helped Lu Daya escape, Tang Wenqian realized that she was not an ordinary, ferocious girl.
But the way she fearlessly risked everything for her family made her even more radiant.
Later, when she fought off three young masters in the Peach Blossom Forest and rescued Lu Sanzhu, she brought gifts the next day.
At that moment, Tang Wenqian sensed that his feelings were different.
Originally, he thought Shu Yu was still young and there was no rush. He also needed to focus on passing the imperial exams before considering anything.
But plans couldn't keep up with changes, and she was exiled.
Moreover, the entire Lu family knew about the incident because of his mother. They followed her to the southwest.
At that moment, Tang Wenqian knew it was impossible.
He wrote an apology letter to her, and Shu Yu didn't blame him. But Tang Wenqian couldn't forget about it.
Later, after staying around Xiang Weinan for a long time, he gradually learned some things, such as...Meng Yunzheng.
He also knew that Shu Yu went to the capital because of Meng Yunzheng.
Tang Wenqian told himself to give up, so after Shu Yu returned, he tried to avoid seeing her.
But today, upon hearing that she was engaged to Master Meng, this feeling in his heart was hard to bear.
However, Tang Wenqian was good at restraining himself. He would bury these feelings deep inside his heart and treat her as a familiar fellow villager.
The news of Shu Yu's engagement was in an uproar for two days before quieting down because Shu You was about to get married again.
This was Shu You's second marriage. Last time, the Zhang family didn't value her, and they didn't spend much on the betrothal gifts or the wedding. On the day of the marriage, Shu You was directly pulled to the Zhang family on a cart.
If it weren't for the local customs in Jiangyuan County, where the bride had to walk without touching the ground on her wedding day, the Zhang family probably wouldn't even want to provide the cart, and they would ask her to walk there instead.
