Meng Yunzheng told them, "Before leaving the capital, I met with him. He said his father's health probably wouldn't last much longer. Once he inherits, he will transfer you back to the capital."
He didn't mention the names of the Fifth Prince and the Emperor, but everyone present knew whom he was referring to.
If Xiang Weinan left, Xiao Shi naturally couldn't stay here.
However, if Xiang Weinan left, they didn't know who the new county magistrate would be and where he would come from.
Hopefully, he would be someone they could get along with.
Fortunately, Shu Yu was now the village lord, so no matter who came, she didn't need to fear them.
On the other hand, Xiang Weinan seemed eager and had a strong desire to showcase his talents.
He patted Meng Yunzheng on the shoulder and asked him, "Are you really just aiming to pass the imperial exams and don't plan to become an official in the court?"
"You've asked me that several times already," Meng Yunzheng replied regretfully. Xiang Weinan knew that if Meng Yunzheng entered the court, he would definitely be a great help to the Fifth Prince.
Unfortunately, that was not his ambition.
After finishing their discussion, it was already late. Meng Yunzheng, Xiang Weinan, and Shu Yu left the Lu family's house.
In the next two days, Meng Yunzheng didn't set foot in the Lu family's house. He was busy helping Zhao Xi, and because of his late return, Zhao Xi kept him busy, trying to make up for the time he missed.
However, even though Meng Yunzheng didn't visit the Lu family, news of his engagement with Shu Yu spread throughout Jiangyuan County on the second day.
Many people had not heard of Meng Yunzheng's name before, except for the neighbors in Liufang Lane and some influential families who knew that he was the son of the Minister of Works. A few months ago, he played an immeasurable role in the Second Prince's attempted rebellion.
Originally, they thought it was just a coincidence of names, and that this person should be in the capital. Why would he come to a remote place like Jiangyuan County?
Later, they heard that it was County Magistrate Xiang who personally acted as the matchmaker, and they confirmed that this person must be the son of that Mister Gong from the capital.
However, only a small number of people knew his identity, and most people found it hard to believe.
She was the village Lord, who even rejected the younger brother of county Princess. She had the backing of Lord Qi, a powerful figure, so how could she get engaged to someone from Jiangyuan County, and not even a prominent figure from there, but a person they had never heard of?
However, the neighbors in Liufang Lane were delighted when they heard the news. Mister Meng was such a handsome man. He was mute before, but now he had recovered, and everything seemed to be going well for him. They felt that he and village lord were naturally a perfect match.
Similarly, the Tang family heard about it too.
Tang Wenqian's mother felt a mix of emotions. When Gu mama asked her about the matter, she didn't think there would be any problem marrying into the Lu family, especially with the County Magistrate's wife personally acting as the matchmaker.
But now, after learning that Shu Yu was engaged to a man surnamed Meng and the matchmaker was the County Magistrate, she couldn't help but feel regretful. Luckily, she didn't mention it to others or to Wenqian; otherwise, it would have been awkward.
Fortunately, Wenqian was currently fully focused on official matters, and marriage was something for the future, with many other better choices.
However, that evening, Wenqian returned to Shishi Village.
He was usually spirited, but on this day, he seemed somewhat listless.
After having dinner with his father and mother, he went to rest in his room.
Tang Wenqian's mother had a bad feeling and followed him into the room.
"Wenqian, what's wrong with you? Are you feeling unwell? I made chicken soup for you. Get up and drink some."
