Ding Yuehua realized that both Kong Zhi You and her husband had come for Shu Yu, or more accurately, for the support of the influential families behind Shu Yu, like the Qi and Yao families.
Feeling uncomfortable with the situation, Ding Yuehua left the celebration early after dinner, thinking that the matter would eventually fade away.
However, the next day, Kong Zhi You paid her a visit.
Kong Zhi You was typically gentle and had never seen her raise her voice or get angry before. But that day, Ding Yuehua encountered a completely different side of her.
Kong Zhi You blamed Ding Yuehua for not informing her earlier about Shu Yu's absence, causing her to invite so many guests and lose face.
Ding Yuehua then learned that a significant portion of the invitations sent by Kong Zhi You were based on the assumption that Shu Yu would attend.
Kong Zhi You's family had a decent background, but her husband's financial situation wasn't prosperous. Since their marriage, Kong Zhi You had to be more frugal in their daily expenses, which was quite different from her previous lifestyle.
As a result, Kong Zhi You participated less in the entertainment activities of wealthy ladies and their wives. Her relationships with some acquaintances gradually faded away. There were even people who mocked her behind her back, saying that she had turned herself into a "yellow-faced wife" (referring to a woman who neglects her appearance) in pursuit of becoming an official's wife in the future. They believed that even if her husband became an official, she would still be despised.
During her birthday celebration, Kong Zhi You invited these people as well. Some of them were reluctant to attend, but Kong Zhi You subtly implied that Shu Yu, the village lord, would also be present.
However, from the beginning to the end of the banquet, Shu Yu never appeared.
Kong Zhi You was furious. Moreover, her husband's family had initially disapproved of her extravagant birthday celebration. They only agreed to it because of Shu Yu's influence and the resources she represented. Now, not only did Kong Zhi You lose face in front of her friends, but she also faced criticism and even physical abuse from her husband.
All her anger was directed at Ding Yuehua, and she confronted her the next day. Ding Yuehua was almost enraged. She had sent Xiao Yun to inform Kong Zhi You early on and had explained the reason for Shu Yu's absence. However, the maidservant, Qiu Ju, who was by Kong Zhi You's side, adamantly denied receiving any notification from Xiao Yun or hearing about Shu Yu leaving the capital.
Both sides insisted that the other was at fault, and they parted ways on bad terms. They had a falling out and ceased all communication after that.
Ding Yuehua said to Shu Yu, "You know Xiao Yun, and I specifically instructed her. How could she not handle the matter properly? It's that Qiu Ju who seems to be lying when she speaks, her eyes were shifting."
Xiao Yun was walking behind the two of them and naturally overheard their conversation.
She pursed her lips and suddenly added, "I know why Qiu Ju lied."
Ding Yuehua turned her head abruptly, "You know?"
Xiao Yun nodded, took a few steps forward, and whispered, "After the falling out between Miss and Madam Chen, I felt indignant and wanted to know why Qiu Ju would falsely accuse me and let Miss be scolded by Madam Chen. So I secretly kept an eye on her."
She used to address Kong Zhi You as Miss Kong, but now, she didn't want to call her that anymore and referred to her as Madam Chen.
"Yesterday, when I went to Yiren Pavilion to pick up Miss's clothes, I saw Qiu Ju there."
