In the vast Jiangyuan County, Shu Yu, as the village chief, held a prestigious position. If she didn't attend the banquet, outsiders might speculate about her relationship with the County magistrate, especially when their relationship was already quite good.
Ding Yuehua comforted Shu Yu, "Luckily, it's not a very formal banquet. The location is at Peach Blossom Forest, so it's probably just a casual stroll to enjoy the flowers. We can find a corner to chat by ourselves."
Peach Blossom Forest was where Lu Sanzhu worked. It was usually open to the public for free, but there were also more private areas that could be reserved exclusively for wealthy young men and ladies.
It seemed that Xiao Shi had chosen such a place.
Seeing Shu Yu's expression ease a bit, Ding Yue Hua continued, "You've been busy for so long, it's time to relax a bit. Don't be too stressed. There's no end to the tasks. During the banquet, County Lord's wife will probably be surrounded by many people talking to her. Let's not approach too much, and we can just enjoy ourselves in Peach Blossom Forest."
Shu Yu chuckled, "You won't approach too much? Do you know the identity of the County magistrate's wife? She is the cousin of the Third Prince and a niece of Empress Xiao."
Ding Yuehua widened her eyes, "She's that powerful?"
"Yes," Shu Yu confirmed.
Ding Yuehua felt a momentary temptation, but she quickly shook her head. "Forget it. The noble ladies from the capital are too far above us. Even if we want to befriend them, our status must be on par with theirs. Our family owns a few shops and workshops in this small county town, which is worlds apart. Approaching them would be futile."
"You see things clearly," Shu Yu agreed.
"I can't compare to you. You know the lady's status and yet still consider whether to attend the banquet? In others' eyes, you would be seen as taking advantage and acting coy," Ding Yuehua remarked.
Shu Yu thought for a moment and realized she might indeed be a bit out of touch with reality.
She couldn't help but laugh.
Since she had made up her mind, she stopped hesitating and had Hua Xian send the RSVP to the county office.
Ying Xi had set off to Huajiang Prefecture with Ying Dong half a month ago.
With fewer servants in the Lu residence, and now that everyone had their designated tasks, Shu Yu had Hua Xian help her with errands.
Normally, when Shu Yu went to the estate, she didn't bring Hua Xian; she would use a carriage instead.
However, when she was at home and occasionally overwhelmed with tasks, she would have Hua Xian run errands for her.
In the following days, Shu Yu remained busy and methodically focused on the affairs of her workshop.
On the third day, she carefully selected an outfit, applied a simple and refreshing makeup, and looked more spirited than before. These days, she had been wearing a simple and plain look, with no time for grooming. Even her grandmother criticized her for not looking like a young lady.
Now, finally receiving her grandmother's approval, Shu Yu happily set off.
Ding Yuehua was waiting outside. She currently lived in Fenghuai Street, which was nearby, and they were both heading to the same place. So, they decided to share a carriage, providing each other with company.
Shu Yu boarded Ding Yuehua's carriage, accompanied by Hua Xian.
When they arrived at the Peach Blossom Forest, it was neither too early nor too late, avoiding drawing unnecessary attention.
They were determined to keep a low profile and stay away from the crowd.
Unexpectedly, as soon as they got off the carriage, Ding Yuehua's face suddenly darkened upon seeing Kong Zhi You, who had also just arrived nearby.
