Lu Sanzhu quickly took out two copper coins, looking somewhat distressed, and said to the two maids, "Excuse me, I am Village Lord Lu's third uncle. Can you help me pass on a message, saying that I have something very important to discuss with her?"
"Village Lord Lu's third uncle? Who are you kidding?" They were not impressed with just two copper coins; he seemed too stingy.
Lu Sanzhu gritted his teeth, about to take out two more copper coins, when he suddenly saw Ding Yuehua standing not far away. He waved at her, "Third Madam Fan."
Ding Yuehua happened to be looking in their direction and paused when she saw Lu Sanzhu. She hurried over, "Third Uncle Lu?"
"It's me. Is Ah Yu inside? Can you call her for me?"
Ding Yuehua looked at him suspiciously, feeling that something was off, but she still nodded and agreed.
In no time, Shu Yu came out, not surprised to see Lu Sanzhu as he worked here.
However, what surprised her was that Lu Sanzhu's hair was still wet.
"You... went into the water?"
Lu Sanzhu pulled her away and quickly found a secluded spot to speak in a low voice, "Just now, I was in the water behind that pavilion. I overheard you talking with the county magistrate's wife."
Shu Yu raised an eyebrow, looking at Lu Sanzhu for a moment, "What were you doing there? Don't you know that the entire area has been reserved for the county magistrate's wife's banquet? If you were caught, you'd be in trouble."
Lu Sanzhu scratched his head, "I took a day off two days ago because Da Bao wasn't feeling well. I didn't come to work yesterday and only came back today after confirming he was fine. When I arrived, I saw a guest frantically searching in that area. They lost a string of Buddhist beads near the pavilion yesterday. Now there are people there, and he didn't want to disturb them. He asked if any of us could swim over from the water and retrieve it, promising a reward of five taels of silver if we found it."
Lu Sanzhu was enticed because he had recently bought a house and was heavily in debt. So without a second thought, he jumped into the water.
"I swam to the pavilion and heard your voice. I peeked and saw the county magistrate's wife."
He then quickly changed direction and swam to the corner behind her.
Shu Yu frowned, "Didn't you know the banquet was hosted by the county magistrate's wife? Didn't the others tell you before you went into the water?"
Lu Sanzhu was taken aback and almost instantly realized, "Damn it, I was set up!"
Shu Yu raised an eyebrow, and Lu Sanzhu cleared his throat before explaining, "Now that I think about it, the two guys who were there with me seemed to be getting close to Cao Changlin."
"Who's that?"
"Someone I have issues with. A while ago, the person managing the woods under Linzi fell sick, and it seems they can't come back to work. The Jidong family wants to pick someone from me and Cao Changlin to be the new manager. I'm the smarter and more capable one, so I have a higher chance, but Cao Changlin doesn't like me. They know that my niece is the Village Lord, so they don't dare to deal with me openly. I guess they were waiting for me to slip up like this."
Lu Sanzhu wasn't afraid of being at the banquet in the Peach Blossom Forest. He was good at swimming, so he wouldn't be easily caught.
Even if someone found him, it wouldn't be a big deal. Shu Yu was the Village Lord, and most people would give her face and listen to his explanation. They probably wouldn't hold him accountable.
However, the issue was that today's banquet was hosted by the county magistrate's wife. Who would dare to disturb that?
