The eighty mu of land that were originally planted with alfalfa had all been cleared, and sunflowers were now planted all over the field. From a distance, the small seedlings were waving in the wind, presenting a vibrant green.
To Shu Yu's surprise, the entire perimeter of the field had been fenced off. Wooden stakes were driven into the ground, connected with layers of hemp ropes, forming a large circle that enclosed the sunflowers.
Moreover, there were many farmers patrolling and taking care of the field with great dedication.
When the approaching carriage caught the attention of some familiar farmers, they looked in their direction.
"It's the young lady; the young lady is back!"
"Quick, go and tell Master Lu."
"Master Lu is watering the crops in the left field; I'll go call him."
As the carriage approached the manor gate, a familiar figure stood up and ran towards them.
"sister Ah Yu!" Xiao Ya'er was very excited. "You're back?"
Shu Yu got off the carriage and smiled, asking, "Why are you sitting at the gate?"
"Auntie Zhou said I'm still young, so she doesn't let me do the hard work. I came to the gate to watch, and I can also shell beans while I'm at it. This way, I can be the first one to see whoever comes."
The little girl was alone and lacked a sense of security. If she didn't do anything, she would feel useless and might be abandoned sooner or later. Auntie Zhou didn't allow her to do heavy work and let her help with lighter tasks from time to time. However, when two strangers came to the manor the day before, she didn't dare to go near them.
She was very happy to see Shu Yu and chatted excitedly.
However, as soon as she saw Shu Yu carrying a little boy out of the carriage, she suddenly stopped.
Curious, she looked at the little boy. But as soon as Little Song Le saw her, he quickly turned his head and buried his face in Shu Yu's arms, holding onto her clothes tightly.
This reaction surprised Shu Yu. During the time they had been together, she had never seen him behave like this. He had always been indifferent to the gazes of others, even when they encountered many people on the boat or on the road who stared at him. He had always been "calm."
Shu Yu began to ponder.
On the other hand, Xiao Ya'er, seeing that her brother didn't seem to want to talk to her, silently retracted her gaze. She walked next to Shu Yu and held her head high, asking, "Sister Yu, are you staying at the manor tonight?"
"No, I just came to take a look. We'll be heading back to the county soon."
Xiao Ya'er looked disappointed. "Alright."
Shu Yu smiled and took out a hairpin from her sleeve. "This is for you. I bought it in the capital city. Children at your age there all wear these. I also bought one for Ah Ning, but it's a different color from yours."
Xiao Ya'er looked at the hairpin in surprise. It was pink and had tassels hanging from it, making it look very pretty.
She loved it, but she should refuse it.
However, before she could say anything, a loud "bang" rang out.
