After waiting for quite some time, the tea on the table had been replaced with a new pot, and the inn's staff were looking at them with peculiar glances. San Lai Zi began to feel anxious.
He glanced at Shu Yu's table, but she gave him a calming look, so he had to continue waiting, fidgeting nervously.
By noon, the innkeeper politely hinted that they were quite busy, and if they were done eating, could they please free up the table.
San Lai Zi stood up with his companion and left the Yuelai Inn.
Shu Yu and Meng Yun Zhe exchanged glances and sighed. It seemed that the person they were expecting would not appear.
Unfortunately, San Lai Zi's information was limited. He didn't know the person's name or where they were from, and he couldn't even describe their appearance properly. He was simply... useless.
The two groups met up again after leaving the inn.
"Young Master Meng, Miss Lu, what's going on here?" San Lai Zi asked with a puzzled expression.
Meng Yunzheng replied, "Either the person knew you didn't get the Meng family's escort agency or they were just playing with you."
San Lai Zi was taken aback. So, he had wasted his efforts and got beaten up, but in the end, he didn't get a single penny?
They couldn't find the person they were waiting for, and there were no clues to follow. It was hard to investigate.
Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng could only temporarily put this matter aside and ask Yan Bo, who was staying in Tianning County, to keep an eye out.
Seeing San Lai Zi's desperate look, Shu Yu felt a bit sorry for him. "If you ever encounter that person again, inform Yan Bo first. If you manage to find the person successfully, I promise you will get your reward."
"Really?" San Lai Zi's eyes lit up.
"As long as you catch the person," Shu Yu added. The amount of the reward would be at her discretion.
This rascal wanted to make money from her?
San Lai Zi didn't think that far. He believed that the Meng family still needed their help, as only they had seen the person's appearance.
"So, are we not waiting any longer and going back?" he asked.
Shu Yu replied, "You can go back. We have some other matters to attend to."
San Lai Zi was about to say they didn't have a carriage to go back with and if they could give them some money to rent one to return to Tianning County. But when he looked up, he saw the gloomy look in Meng Yunzheng's eyes, and he felt a chill down his spine. The pain from being kicked a couple of days ago seemed to resurface, so he quickly pulled his companion and slipped away.
Seeing this, Shu Yu couldn't help but chuckle, saying to Meng Yunzheng, "You used to have a warm and gentle smile that made people think you were approachable and easy to talk to. Now, you don't need to pretend anymore. I didn't expect that just a look could scare people away."
Meng Yunzheng helplessly replied, "Stop laughing. Let's go."
The two of them continued walking to the place where the carriage was parked. Ying Xi was there, drinking water. When she saw them, she jumped down from the cart.
"Miss and Young Master Meng, did you meet the person?" Ying Xi asked.
Shu Yu shook her head, "They didn't show up. I don't know if they were aware that we were waiting for them or if they never intended to meet San Lai Zi and the others."
Ying Xi nodded, "What should we do now?"
Meng Yunzheng helped Shu Yu onto the carriage and replied, "We don't have time right now, and we're not familiar with Huajiang Prefecture or Tianning County. We'll have to rely on Yan Bo to pay more attention to this matter."
Ying Xi nodded again and helped them both onto the carriage, then pulled down the curtain. "Miss, are we going back now?"
Shu Yu replied, "No, we're going to the prison in the prefecture."
