In the following days, the group traveled on the water.
The large ship would stop at a dock every three to five days for resupply, and during these times, they would get off the ship and take a walk.
Although Gouwa still didn't speak, his health had improved significantly. Previously, he only had two meals a day, mostly thin rice gruel. Aunt Hong occasionally cooked some food for him, but it was limited. Moreover, she always hurried him to finish quickly, not considering that a child's weak stomach couldn't handle such a diet.
Now it was different; he ate white rice and flour, served in proper and warm meals three times a day. With the presence of a doctor like old doctor Zhao, they could adjust his diet accordingly.
After becoming familiar with Gouwa, old doctor Zhao checked his throat while he was asleep. He had a hunch that Gouwa didn't speak because he didn't want to.
He also had a conjecture - during the period when Gouwa should have been learning to speak, the food he ate might have damaged his throat, which discouraged him from trying to speak.
Regardless, they could only try to nurse him back slowly.
After more than twenty days, Gouwa's body had visibly gained more weight. When Shu Yu held him in her arms felt noticeably heavier.
As a result, during their subsequent stops, either Gouwa would walk on his own, or Meng Yunzheng or Zhao Xi would carry him. Shu Yu hardly needed to hold him anymore.
After a few more days, the large ship finally docked at Huajiang Prefecture.
Shu Yu let out a sigh of relief and said to Gouwa, "We finally got off the ship. We'll take a carriage back from here."
Gouwa's reactions had become much more noticeable than before. Whenever Shu Yu spoke, he would look up at her and nod.
Shu Yu couldn't help but pat his little head, finding his touch soft and gentle.
Previously, Gouwa's hair was sparse and yellowish, making him look like a skinny monkey. Now, he looked completely different.
"Yu'er, you guys can go sit at the stalls over there and have some food. We'll move the luggage and carriage down."
Shu Yu nodded, "Alright, take your time, no rush."
It was not yet noon, so there was still plenty of time.
Shu Yu held Gouwa's hand and slowly walked to a steamed bun stall. There were various stalls on the square in front of the dock.
Since they were close to the dock and could still see the ship, Shu Yu ordered two large buns and two bowls of soup for them. Then she lifted Gouwa onto a stool.
"Let's eat while we wait for them."
Gouwa nodded, holding the buns with both hands and slowly nibbling.
He no longer constantly held the wooden bead in his right hand because it could easily slip away. A while ago on the ship, the bead nearly fell into the water, frightening him.
Shu Yu suggested that he put the bead in the pocket and take it out to look at before bedtime.
Gouwa found this acceptable and obediently put it away.
His situation didn't seem to be autism.
Seeing him eating happily, Shu Yu couldn't help but smile.
Suddenly, a conversation came from the table next to them.
"Which high-ranking official is returning to the capital this time? Look at the number of people standing on both sides of the official ship; the pomp is quite grand."
"Not as grand as when Minister Qi returned to the capital last time."
Hearing the name "Qi Chan," Shu Yu subconsciously raised her head and looked in the direction they were talking about.
