The reaction was immediate and made her breath catch. It didn’t seem to matter that they’d only just met—a picture of his fingers brushing her face and stroking her tail surfaced.
She was very glad to have the cover of night masking the blush rushing to her cheeks.
“So, you do not like birds?” she asked while they walked, hoping to continue the light conversation from dinner.
“Nah. My family had one growing up, and that hellkite screamed. All. The. Time.” Matt chuckled. “And the damn thing hated me. I’m sure I have a couple of scars on my shoulder.”
“That’s quite unfortunate. The final test of all [Hunter]s is to capture and tame a companion on their own.” Lily scratched Pip on the head.
“I was afraid you’d say that. We already have a parrot familiar in the Party who isn’t my biggest fan.” Matt glanced upward. “Though, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the little guy.”
Lily squeezed his hand. “I’m certain Keke’s bird will take to you just fine.”
“Thanks. I hope so.”
His words faded into the sky as Lily stepped up to her door. Pip flew away, taking his favorite perch on the roof, and Lily hesitated. She took a deep breath and, with trembling fingers, turned the handle.
“Give me just a moment,” she said as they moved inside. The last embers of her fire glowed a soft red; the only light in the common room. But she could see in the dark nearly as well as she could in the brilliant sunlight and was quick to ignite the few oil lamps she kept on the walls.
“Is every cabin this cozy?” Matt wondered as he slid off his jacket.
Lily watched, entranced. The black top he wore underneath hugged the taut muscles of his chest and arms, creating firm lines that she’d never seen before. She wondered what they felt like—
“Lily?” He tipped his head to the side and smiled. “Still nervous?” Strands of his dark bangs and the one red streak fell into his eyes.
No. Nervous wasn’t the right word. She felt the same excitement and anticipation at the beginning of a hunt. The blessed thrill of pursuing a target. She shook her head. “Forgive me, Matt. I just find you…” What did she call him? Were there correct terms for these things? “Exciting.”
“That’s a new one. Though, I don’t know if I fit that bill. Especially not right now.”
Lily removed her cloak as she pondered his strange words. Why would a man need to fit a bird’s bill? She bit her lip and decided now wasn’t the time to ask. “Sylva believes your Party has faced many difficult hunts.”
“Yeah. I guess that’s one way to put it.”
After hanging her cloak, Lily removed her boots and closed the distance between them. “I see our paths crossing as a triumph.” She took his hands in hers. They were so warm. “I pray you think the same.”
Matt leaned forward and kissed her forehead. “You sure know how to make a guy feel better,” he murmured into her hair.
Lily shivered and released his grasp, testing her fingertips against his abdomen. “M-may I?”
“Mhm,” he hummed. He shifted one of his hands to the back of her neck and cradled her head in his palm.
Just as she began to map the lines of his chest, he held a fistful of her short hair, tickled the length of her ear with his tongue, then nibbled on its edge. A small moan escaped her throat as another shiver slid down her spine. He slid one hand beneath her dress and fondled the base of her tail.
Lily’s fingers curled into fists, and she gasped. His movements were slow and deliberate, and their potent effects were as if he’d touched her a hundred times before. She worked to concentrate on the landscape beneath her hands, but her attention was constantly diverted by his tongue and hand.
For the first time in her life, she felt like prey. Matt understood his quarry with the skill of a seasoned [Hunter], and she could do little in response. This was unknown, untouched territory. Lily relaxed into the sensation, allowing her wandering fancies to return. Quietly willing him to continue to do as he wished.
“Should we move to your room?” he asked.
She somehow heard him over the adrenaline pounding in her ears. “Yes.” She took his hand and led him the short distance between the common room and her bed. There was a moment where she wondered if she should turn on the lamp for his benefit, but it ended when Matt snatched the hem of her dress and pulled it over her head.
Stealing her opportunity, she did the same with Matt’s shirt as he freed the fastenings on his belt and trousers. Their underthings came off next, slowly piling at their feet as they worked. Baring herself was as natural as breathing; every member of her clan had survived the elements in their natural skin for days on end. In those times, she’d yearned for warmth. Now, she yearned to feel his skin on hers.
Even so, this was a journey she understood she would only experience once, and she took her time in charting his body. Her fingertips wandered over scars and divots on his arms and shoulders from battle. Healed skin from a venomous cut across his chest. Smooth flesh over toned muscles. The gentle slope of his neck that led to a strong jawline.
“Your stare is intense,” Matt muttered. He brushed his fingers along her throat.
“My apologies. I…I never want to forget this.”
“Then I’d better not disappoint you.” Matt sank to his knees and parted her thighs with one hand.
Lily watched as he moved, wondering what he had planned. Five heartbeats passed, and she found herself gripping his hair with both hands, bent forward, and whimpering with pleasure. He’d slipped his tongue past her slit and two fingers inside her heat. It was sudden and sensitive and breathtaking. His free hand reached around her hip and found her tail, wrapping it around his palm and adding gentle tugs in time with his explorative fingers.
“A-anh…Your t-tongue—” Lily breathed. “Spirits bless you, Matt. That feels incredible.”
His low hum vibrated against her delicate skin, reverberating through her thighs and hips. Her knees quivered, and her grasp on his hair tightened.
She was simultaneously physically freed and locked in place, caught between his mouth and his hold on her tail. A need to fall to her back and spread her legs warred with the desire to stay exactly as she was, watching the muscles in his arms and upper back tense and release as he worked.
Another finger entered her depths, and she cried out. Matt’s movements grew faster, compounding the building tension between her thighs. The longer he worked, the better it felt. Like every nerve in her body was awake and alive, reveling in his machinations.
Just as she teetered on the edge of her climax, he pulled away, releasing her tail and leaving her empty. She moaned with disappointment, longing for him to bring him there.
“You’re close, aren’t you?” Matt asked.
“Yes.” Lily took a step backward, then another in a crazed delirium. “If you knew, why did you stop?”
To her surprise, Matt blushed. “Just…trust me.” He followed her and urged her the rest of the way to her bed. “Lay down.”
She did as he asked, and he positioned her legs so that her calves and feet dangled over the side. But he remained standing.
“Matt?” Both their eyes had adjusted in the dim lighting, and the hunger he favored her with was palpable.
“Tell me if I need to stop, okay?”
“I… Alright.”
He lifted her legs and rested her knees on his shoulders. Her calves brushed his upper back as he aligned himself with her. Her heart sped as she felt the large pressure at her center. There wasn’t an opportunity to consider how he would feel. He penetrated her and met no resistance.
“Ah!” Lily found purchase in her blanket, strangling twin handfuls between her fingers. Her back arched, and her breathing hitched in her throat. It was no wonder no one had ever described such a sensation to her—it was impossible. Vulnerable, starved, stretched, filled. She rocked her hips against him, and another cry tore from her lips.
“Want me to go back to what I was doing?” Matt teased.
“N-no!” the command left her tongue before she could think twice. Being a part of him was so much better. So much more. “Keep going. Please,” she pleaded, bucking her hips upward once more.
Matt wrapped one forearm around her calf and laid his other over her lower abdomen, holding her in place. He slowly pulled away, then thrust back into her without restraint. Lily wriggled in his grip, but he held firm, repeating the motion. He had her where he wanted, and he’d have his way. He had a [Hunter]’s disposition, and she found ecstasy in yielding.
His rhythm sped, and her eyes rolled back. He breached and claimed pieces of her she’d never known she could offer. In turn, she reached indescribable peaks of bliss that encouraged her to offer more.
Beads of sweat trickled down Lily’s forehead and neck despite her lack of exertion in the exchange. “I’m close.” Her tongue was dry, and she swallowed against a parched throat, gasping as a new inch of her body was uncovered. “Can I…?”
“Yes. Come for me, Lily,” Matt growled.
The command was enough. Pleasure trickled from the tips of her ears to her toes like the rain on her roof. Throbbing convulsions pulsed between her legs, and a desperate cry rang against every wall in her cabin.
Matt doubled his efforts, elevating her climax. He released her abdomen and palmed her breast, toying with her hard nipple between his fingers.
“Mnh…I’m gonna come,” Matt said. The hand around her thigh moved to hold one of hers clasped around the sheets.

Their rapid breathing slowed to match with the air they stole from one another. Lily wrapped her tail around Matt’s lower back, letting the tip caress his spine. Matt bent forward and rested on top of her, never breaking their kiss.
Long after the throbbing stopped and they tumbled down from heights Lily had never known, their kiss remained.
After a time, she pulled away, nibbling his lower lip before cupping his face in both hands. His amber eyes swirled with contentment, and he smiled.
“Think you’ll remember me?” he muttered.
“For all of my life, Matt.” Lily kissed the tip of his nose.
He grinned. “I’ll never forget you, either.”
“That is very kind of you to say.” She brushed the stray hairs away from his face. “I pray our paths will cross again.”
“I’ll do what I can. But—” his lips brushed against hers, “—we don’t have to say goodbye just yet.”
Lily giggled and gladly welcomed his kiss. The kiss of a true [Hunter].

Matt seems to be growing more and more skilled as the story progresses. < “That’s quite unfortunate.
