However, Dazhuang would look at the wooden bead every night. If the bead went missing, he would become restless and start making a fuss.
Aunt Hong tried to replace the bead with another similar one, but Dazhuang immediately saw through her ruse.
Thankfully, they had kept the bead hidden in the room for so many years without anyone discovering it.
It was only after he got married that Dazhuang handed the wooden bead to his wife.
Before she was taken away by her family, his wife placed it in the hands of their newborn child, Gouwa.
Gouwa cared even more about the wooden bead than Dazhuang did, and Aunt Hong couldn't take it away from him.
However, as long as Gouwa was at home and had her to watch over him, there was no problem.
It was only today, when she was planning to bring Gouwa over to them, that the bead fell in front of everyone.
Aunt Hong glanced at them and said in a low voice, "I don't have the ability. My husband is gone, and I have a daughter-in-law and grandchildren to take care of. I can't even think about finding the murderer. But you, if you have connections with high-ranking officials, maybe you can find the killer from back then and avenge the Song family."
After all, that bead was a clue.
Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng exchanged glances. The culprit was undoubtedly Gong Qiu.
Aunt Hong continued, "Alright, I've said everything. I'll leave the child to you."
Zhao Xi asked her, "Does the child have any illnesses?"
Aunt Hong's face changed slightly, and she fell silent.
Zhao Xi said, "I am a doctor."
Aunt Hong was stunned and sighed, "I don't know what illness he has. He has always been like this. He's two years old now and still hasn't spoken. He's always in a daze. I took him to see a doctor, but the doctor said he couldn't do anything and that only the imperial physicians in the palace could treat him. But how could I have the ability and money to invite them? So, I've been raising him for a few years like this."
Afraid that they would refuse to take the child if they found out he was sick, Aunt Hong hurriedly added, "Gouwa is very obedient. He just doesn't speak, but he will listen and follow whatever we tell him to do. He's not a fool. Although his father, Dazhuang, became foolish due to smoke, he was originally clever. Gouwa wasn't born a fool."
This last sentence was said softly, something she had heard from her daughter-in-law's sharp tongue.
It was because she had seen her daughter-in-law secretly bully Gouwa that Aunt Hong decided to send the child over to them. She was getting older and relied on her son and daughter-in-law, so she didn't have the ability to protect and raise this child anymore.
Besides, Gouwa wasn't her own flesh and blood, so it made sense to hand him over to his cousin for care.
"He is definitely not a fool." Shu Yu didn't like the term.
She thought that Gouwa might have autism, but it was a bit different.
However, since she wasn't a doctor, she couldn't make a diagnosis. She could only let Zhao Xi and Master Zhao take a look later.
Aunt Hong nodded, "It's good that you don't treat him as a fool. It's getting dark outside, and my house is far away. I have to leave now."
She didn't delay any further and said goodbye to Gouwa, "Don't follow me anymore. From now on, we probably won't see each other again. Live your life well."
She turned and left. This time, Gouwa didn't try to chase after her. He just stood there, staring blankly at her back, tears shimmering in his eyes.
However, he still didn't make a sound. His small body swayed slightly, standing there all alone.
