Aunt Hong stood up and pulled Gouwa over, her actions a bit rough, causing Meng Yunzheng to furrow his brows.
"I heard that during the big fire at the Song family back then, there wasn't a single survivor."
"There was one, Gouwa's father, Dazhuang, is still alive," Aunt Hong said. "At that time, Dazhuang was just a little over one year old, and I don't know who hid him. When we arrived, Dazhuang still had a breath left. He was my little sister's only son, and my husband couldn't bear it, so he brought Dazhuang home to raise him."
Aunt Hong sneered, "Who knew that Dazhuang would become a fool. The doctor said he was choked with smoke, and there was no cure. Nevertheless, we still raised Dazhuang safely. That should be enough, right?"
Everyone in the room was stunned, and seeing this, Aunt Hong began to cry miserably.
"We not only raised the Song family's grandson, but also married Dazhuang to a wife who gave birth to Gouwa. We have done our best. However, we really can't afford to raise this child anymore, so we can only give him to you."
Shu Yu frowned, "Didn't you say that Gouwa's father is a fool? How could he marry someone?"
"Who said that a fool can't get married?" Aunt Hong dismissed the notion. "His wife's family was greedy for money and asked for a dowry. Seeing that our family could only come up with five taels of silver, they didn't care if Dazhuang was a fool or not and married her directly."
Seeing that Shu Yu still disagreed, Aunt Hong raised her voice, "Although Dazhuang is a fool, he is quite affectionate and treats his wife well. His wife is better off following him than staying at home. Having a child was also her own choice. Who knew her luck was so bad? She was just pregnant when Dazhuang went out to catch fish for her, and he accidentally fell into the river and drowned."
"What about Gouwa's mother now?" Meng Yunzheng asked.
Aunt Hong pursed her lips and sighed suddenly, "After Dazhuang died, she became a widow. Isn't our village encouraging widows to remarry? After giving birth to Gouwa, she was taken back to her family and remarried. Gouwa's mother didn't want to go, but she couldn't resist the large group of people from her family. We tried to stop them, but they accused us of having ulterior motives, wanting Gouwa's mother to remain a widow for her whole life. We couldn't stop them, and they took her away."
"Do you know where she remarried?" Meng Yunzheng asked.
Aunt Hong shook her head, "How would I know? Her family was afraid that she would come back to look for Gouwa, so they married her far away. Even her family left the capital city with her. It's been two years, and she hasn't come back."
Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng glanced at each other. It seemed difficult to find her.
Aunt Hong had raised Dazhuang, so she must have some affection for him. As she spoke, her gaze toward Gouwa softened.
"Now, I really have no way out. Dazhuang is gone, and his wife is gone. My husband passed away half a year ago, and I, a widow, have to depend on whether my son and daughter-in-law are filial. There are several grandchildren in the family, which makes it really difficult. I can't afford to raise this child."
She paused for a moment and then made a tough decision. "If you don't take him away, I'll have to send him to Ciyu Orphanage."
Ciyu Orphanage was a place specifically for adopting orphans.
Although there were many children there, it was chaotic, and they couldn't be properly cared for. Incidents of older children bullying younger ones were common.
After Aunt Hong finished speaking, she stood up, "I've said everything I needed to say. I'm leaving."
