Perhaps realizing that there was no way for her to escape, the woman became quiet after entering the courtyard.
She looked around the small and not very wealthy courtyard and sneered, but her eyes were filled with apprehension.
What if Song Xin's son didn't have much money and didn't want to take care of this child? Regardless, she wouldn't bring the child back with her.
Shu Yu walked into the main hall and saw Meng Yunzheng and the others inside. When they saw her and the child in her arms, they were all puzzled.
"What's going on? Who is this?" Meng Pei asked.
Shu Yu gestured toward the woman and said, "I don't know either. You can ask her."
The woman looked at everyone in the room. Although they didn't look like wealthy people, they seemed better off than her. It shouldn't be a problem for them to raise a child.
Feeling a little relieved at this thought, the woman raised her head and asked, "Which one of you is Song Xin's son?"
Hearing the name Song Xin, both Meng Pei and Meng Yunzheng furrowed their brows.
After a moment, Meng Yunzheng took a step forward and said, "I am."
The woman examined him and commented, "You do look somewhat like your mother."
"Do you know my mother?" Meng Yunzheng was somewhat surprised.
The woman nodded, "I saw her a couple of times. Your mother's appearance is unforgettable even if you only catch a glimpse of her."
Shu Yu thought her words seemed reasonable and without malicious intent. She smiled and invited, "Since Auntie knows my mother, why don't you just say what you want directly? Why did you run away? Auntie, please take a seat, and we can talk slowly."
She asked Ying Xi to help serve tea.
The woman did seem exhausted from her journey, and she drank the whole cup of water in one gulp.
Shu Yu noticed that her hands were slightly trembling. Even though she looked composed, she seemed quite nervous.
Without saying much, Shu Yu poured another cup of warm water and squatted down to feed the child.
The child's expression remained blank, but he obediently opened his mouth to drink the water. After drinking about half a cup, he shook his head.
Once they both finished drinking water, Meng Yunzheng asked, "May I know how I should address you? And how do you know my mother?"
After hesitating for a moment, the woman said, "My husband's surname is Hong. You can call me Aunt Hong. As for how I know your mother…" Her voice lowered, "Our Hong family is considered in-laws of the Song family. My husband is the older brother of your aunt."
Meng Yunzheng was taken aback.
He knew everyone in the Song family.
Song Xin had three siblings: Song Pei, Song Xin, and her younger brother Song Qing, who was only a year younger than her.
Song Xin's parents treated her poorly, wanting her to marry a wealthy man from a young age. Because of this, they decided for her to become an outsider and marry into the palace.
Song Pei was four years older than Song Xin, and since their parents had always instilled in him that his sister would eventually become the means to support him, he considered her his future source of wealth.
When he reached a marriageable age, he rejected all the matchmaking opportunities, believing he would wait until Song Xin grew up, married a rich man, and subsequently elevated his status so that he could marry a girl with a better family background.
Therefore, when Song Xin became an concubine, Song Pei hadn't married yet.
