When Shu Yu left the Qi family, it was already late.
She didn't plan to continue shopping outside. Instead, she returned to the south-side courtyard to prepare for the next day when they would start the relocation of Song Xin's grave. After that, they would leave the capital directly.
As Shu Yu and Ying Xi walked into the alley, they saw a middle-aged woman standing at the entrance of their courtyard. She wore a grayish-black coarse cloth and had sweat on her face. Her hair was disheveled.
In her hands, she held a small, thin child, who appeared to be about two years old. The child's clothes were much too large for him, hanging loosely on his skinny frame, exposing his frail shoulders.
The woman and the child lingered at the entrance of the courtyard. She raised her hand several times, seemingly wanting to knock on the door, but hesitated each time, unable to make up her mind.
Shu Yu and Ying Xi exchanged a glance. They didn't recognize this person; it seemed they had never seen her before.
Shu Yu took a few steps forward and asked, "May I ask who you are looking for?"
Her sudden voice startled the woman, who had been lost in her thoughts. She turned around abruptly, and the child, who had been blankly staring ahead, also turned his gaze toward them, showing a vacant expression.
Shu Yu was taken aback. The child...
The woman steadied herself and took a deep breath before asking, "Is the son of Song Xin living here?"
Shu Yu was surprised. She came to find Meng Yunzheng?
Moreover, her choice of words was strange. Instead of using his current name, she mentioned Song Xin's name from before.
Shu Yu nodded again and asked, "Do you have any business with him?"
"Is it true that he is Song Xin's son?" the woman asked.
Shu Yu was puzzled. Why did she mention Song Xin again? Instead of using his current name, she referred to him by his mother's name.
Shu Yu nodded once more, "Yes, he is inside. May I ask what you want?"
After receiving confirmation, the woman suddenly bent down, picked up the child beside her, and then without saying another word, she thrust the child into Shu Yu's arms.
"This is Song's child. I'm leaving him with you," she said before turning around and running out of the alley without looking back.
Shu Yu instinctively caught the child, but her expression changed immediately. "Ying Xi."
Ying Xi hurriedly caught up with the woman. She was quick, and the woman hadn't even reached the end of the alley when she intercepted her.
The woman tried to dodge, but Ying Xi blocked her way tightly, not giving her a chance to escape.
After several attempts, the woman stomped her foot and said, "Let me go!"
Ying Xi didn't say a word but firmly held her hand, pulling her back.
"Let go of me! What are you doing? Don't touch me!" The woman kept slapping Ying Xi's hand with force, making her own hand red, but he didn't loosen his grip.
Shu Yu frowned and asked, "Auntie, why are you running away? You gave me a child without any explanation. Isn't it inappropriate?"
As they were speaking, the courtyard door was opened.
Zhao Xi, who had heard the commotion, came out and looked at the group of people entangled at the door, puzzled. "What's going on? Who is this person?"
Shu Yu also wanted to know.
The alley was becoming more crowded as people passing by noticed the commotion.
Shu Yu signaled to Ying Xi, then carried the child and walked straight into the courtyard. Ying Xi also pulled the struggling woman inside.
Although Zhao Xi was still confused, he quickly closed the door.
