Madam Yao had learned from her nephew's vague words that the girl and he had met on a boat. In other words, she wasn't originally from the capital.
Zhu mama was quite curious about the girl's background, as the masters had spent the past five years in the southwest. Besides people from the capital, there might be acquaintances from that region.
Zhu mama assumed that Shu Yu came from the southwest.
However, Shu Yu surprised her by saying, "My surname is Lu, and I'm from Dong'an Prefecture."
Lu? Zhu mama had never heard of it. The servants from the Yao family had scattered when Yao Tianqin was exiled, and the current servants were newly recruited after they returned to the capital. Therefore, Zhu mama wasn't familiar with any relatives or friends from the Yao family's past.
Though she had been with the Yao family for some time, she had never heard of any relatives from Dong'an Prefecture.
While she was still pondering, the sound of hurried footsteps came from behind.
Zhu mama subconsciously turned around and said in surprise, "Master?"
Shu Yu also turned around and indeed saw Yao Tianqin, who looked anxious, as if he had just returned from outside the residence.
Yao Tianqin looked up and froze when he saw Shu Yu, rubbing his eyes and muttering softly, "Could it be that I've been looking at too many blueprints today?"
He took a few more steps forward.
Seeing her clearly, he realized it wasn't his eyes playing tricks on him. The person in front of him was indeed Shu Yu.
Yao Tianqin was both shocked and pleasantly surprised as he spoke, "Ah Yu? It's really you? How did you come here? When did you arrive in the capital? Why didn't you inform us in advance so we could pick you up outside the city?"
Shu Yu bowed and replied, "Uncle Yao, it's been a long time. I came to the capital on a whim. You have so many important matters to attend to, how could I bother you to come and pick me up? By the way, congratulations on becoming the Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Works."
Yao Tianqin burst into laughter, "You, this girl, are always so polite with your uncle. Come, come, come inside first. Your aunt will be thrilled to see you."
"Okay."
Shu Yu walked ahead with Yao Tianqin, while Ying Xi followed behind.
Zhu mama was momentarily stunned, then hurriedly caught up.
However, her gaze at Shu Yu's back now held a hint of curiosity. The fact that she was so familiar with the master was surprising. Since Yao Tianqin became the Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Works, they had received guests one after another, but when it came to the female family members, Yao Tianqin usually just nodded and had his wife entertain them. He rarely said much, especially to younger ones.
People who didn't know thought Yao Tianqin was still as focused on his official duties as before, and he didn't like socializing.
Little did they know that behind their backs, there were unkind remarks about how the master looked down on them.
Even when the young master and others who recently came to visit, Yao Tianqin only inquired about the family situation briefly and maintained a respectful distance. It was completely different from the way he was now—smiling, familiar, and talking much more, almost chatty.
"How is your father? After you returned to Dong'an Prefecture, he sent me a letter, which arrived just last month. It was quite slow. He mentioned planning to open a shop. Has the shop opened?"
Shu Yu smiled, "When I set off for the capital, the shop hadn't opened yet. My father was busy repairing my courtyard. He started preparing after the housewarming banquet, and I believe it's open now. My father's business is doing well."
Yao Tianqin paused, calculated the time in his mind, and then furrowed his brow, "Then you must have arrived in the capital a long time ago?"
