Meng Yunzheng continued, "Later, when my mother was escaping, she met my father, Meng Pei. At that time, my father happened to be indebted to my mother for her kindness during his youth. Seeing my mother in distress, he brought her back to where he lived."
"My father knew that my mother had nowhere to go and no money, so he took care of her. Over time, they developed feelings for each other and got married. I..."
The emperor raised his hand to interrupt him, "When did they get married?"
"One month later."
"One month?" The emperor narrowed his eyes, "You mean your father knew that your mother was Gong Qiu's concubine, yet within such a short time, he married her without any pressure? That doesn't make sense. Even if Meng Pei had feelings for your mother from the beginning and wanted to help her in her time of need, getting married within a month seems unreasonable. Normal men, knowing that a woman is already someone else's concubine, wouldn't marry her so quickly. Even if Meng Pei liked her from the start, it would be odd to complete the marriage in just one month."
Meng Yunzheng fell silent for a moment before he spoke in a low voice, "Back then... when my mother escaped from the Liu family, she was drugged, so..."
This excuse was something Meng Yunzheng didn't want to say if the emperor didn't ask, as it would damage his parents' reputation.
But since the emperor had asked, he had to find a way to explain.
"My father was a guard at a transport agency and had traveled extensively since he was young. He had become very chivalrous and responsible. He already had feelings for my mother from before, and her desperate situation made him feel even more obligated to help her. He didn't care if my mother was someone else's concubine or what her original identity was. As for my mother, she was at the end of her rope, and my father's appearance was like a life-saving straw, which she grabbed onto tightly."
"Because... of their relationship, my father worried that my mother might become pregnant, so they decided to get married within a short time. Originally, our Meng family's transport agency was located in Jinle Prefecture, but it was too close to the capital. When my mother returned with my father to our hometown, she coincidentally encountered familiar faces and was afraid of being recognized by Gong Qiu. To avoid any trouble, my father decided to bring my mother to Tianning County and opened another Full Prosperity Escort Agency there."
The emperor listened thoughtfully and nodded after a long pause, "Go on."
"My father's concerns were indeed justified. My mother did become pregnant due to their relationship. However, her body was not in great condition, possibly due to the previous drugging incident or the constant anxiety. Her pregnancy was not easy. In the later stages, she was frightened and prematurely gave birth. At that time, I was born."
Meng Yunzheng spoke with increasing certainty, "After my birth, my mother's condition improved, and she gradually let go of the past. She and my father lived a peaceful life. This continued until I was ten years old."
"That year, my father went on a business trip, leaving my mother and me at home. Unexpectedly, one of Gong Qiu's confidants appeared in Tianning County on official business. My mother recognized him at a glance and knew that Gong Qiu would soon find out about her whereabouts. She also knew that Gong Qiu wouldn't spare our family of three. At that moment, my mother decided to take me away from Tianning County, but unfortunately, we were a step too late."
"That night, the escort agency caught fire, and my mother and I were in a daze and couldn't wake up. When I finally woke up, the agency had been mostly burned down, and my mother had perished in the fire."
