Shu Yu asked quickly and anxiously, and Meng Yunzheng didn't interrupt her. After she finished asking, he whispered, "The real culprit is my half-sister from the Gong family."
"Her?" Shu Yu frowned. She remembered that this half-sister was only around fourteen years old.
Besides, wasn't she close to Madam Gong and the Second Young Master of the Gong family? Why would she want to kill the Second Young Master?
This young lady from the Gong family was the daughter of her birth mother, Chen Shi. Madam Chen used to be a maid by Madam Gong's side, and they were close. When Madam Gong couldn't conceive, she had Chen Shi adopted a child, planning to raise the child as her own.
However, Chen Shi was not favored by Madam Gong, who rarely interacted with her. Instead, another maid gave birth to the Second Young Master of the Gong family. The mother died during childbirth, and since it was a boy, he became Madam Gong's son.
Three years later, Chen Shi finally gave birth to the eldest daughter of the Gong family, Gong Ya.
Chen Shi wanted Madam Gong to adopt Gong Ya as her legitimate daughter, but Madam Gong already had the Second Young Master and spent a lot of energy taking care of him, as he was in poor health. She didn't want any additional trouble.
Moreover, Gong Ya was just a girl and would eventually marry into another family. There was no advantage in recognizing her as a legitimate daughter. On the contrary, if she married as a legitimate daughter, she would have to provide a dowry.
Despite this, Chen Shi and Gong Ya never gave up. Gong Ya had been diligently serving Madam Gong for many years, considering herself part of Madam Gong's side of the family. As a result, she treated Meng Yunzheng as an enemy and a rival. She believed that she and the Second Young Master were the legitimate heirs of the Gong family, while Meng Yunzheng, an outsider who had only returned to the Gong family at the age of ten, disrupted the harmony within the family. As an outsider, he should be driven out of the Gong family.
Gong Ya played a significant role in tarnishing Meng Yunzheng's reputation over the past two years. Although Meng Yunzheng never said it directly, Shu Yu guessed from his words and clues from Zhao Xi that Gong Ya was responsible for poisoning Meng Yunzheng.
So why did this young lady, who regarded the Second Young Master and Gong Madam as her backing, kill the Second Young Master?
Meng Yunzheng said, "Gong Ya is now over fourteen years old and has reached the age of marriage."
Shu Yu was taken aback, "You mean Madam Gong and her son are interfering in her marriage?"
"Yes." Meng Yunzheng nodded, "Gong Chang is seventeen years old this year, which is the right age for him to get engaged, if not married. But due to his health, the matter has been delayed."
Despite Gong Chang's poor health, his identity as a member of the Gong family meant that there were still families interested in forming a marriage alliance. The problem was that Madam Gong didn't like those families.
On the other hand, the families Madam Gong favored were not interested in forming an alliance with Gong Chang. Who would want to marry a sickly boy, especially one who wasn't even a legitimate heir of the Gong family?
As a result, Gong Chang's marriage had not been settled yet.
Naturally, Madam Gong was anxious about this. Unfortunately, Gong Ya, because of the incident where she poisoned Meng Yunzheng, was not favored by Madam Gong, and she had no one to discuss the matter with.
Coincidentally, news came out from the Duke Liu's residence a few days ago, saying that they were looking for a suitable marriage for their eldest granddaughter.
