As she spoke, Shu Yu glanced at Meng Yunzheng and continued, "Yunzheng saw Cheng Dong when he was with Gong Qiu, and he knew what kind of person Gong Qiu was. So, he suspected that Cheng Dong was deliberately getting close to you and secretly passed on this information to you."
"However, we didn't expect that Cheng Dong managed to escape. But halfway through his escape, he attempted to hijack a passing carriage and accidentally ran into me. That part was truly unexpected. But it wasn't because I suspected him that I tied him up, it was because I sensed that he was not a good person from the beginning, and I immediately tried to knock him unconscious."
Qi Chan listened thoughtfully, "Did he really swallow poison to commit suicide?"
Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng exchanged glances but remained silent.
Seeing their expressions, Qi Chan became even more certain of their words, knowing they weren't lying to him.
He sighed and shook his head, "I underestimated you."
Shu Yu whispered, "Minister Qi, the situation forced us to act that way. We didn't mean to deceive you. And I really didn't have any intention of getting close to you on purpose. The journey of exile and the time spent at each station were all arranged by the officials. Meeting you at the station was purely accidental. Actually, when I encountered the assassin who wanted to kill you that day, it wasn't my credit to catch him. With my limited skills and shackles on my hands and feet, I couldn't have lasted until your two guards arrived. Yunzheng acted behind the scenes, buying us some time."
Hearing this, Qi Chan couldn't help but say, "What did you take me for? I wouldn't suspect you to be so cunning."
He could see that she wasn't deliberately got close to him during the journey of exile.
Moreover, she had several opportunities while at Zhengdao Village to ask him for help to free herself from the identity of a convict. After all, she wasn't the biological daughter of the Shu family.
Although Qi Chan had been exiled, he still had connections and ways to help a seemingly unremarkable adopted daughter of the Shu family regain her freedom.
Qi Chan smiled and said, "Alright, I don't have any intention of blaming you. If we talk about getting close, I might have benefited more from it. Whether it was me or Yao Tianqin, being able to return to the capital has a lot to do with you. At worst, even if you were deliberately getting close to me, you were the one who developed the heating packs. At most, you were just using my hands to present it."
However, such deeds could be done by others, not just him.
Qi Chan still valued Shu Yu; perhaps because of her sincerity, he felt a subtle connection with her.
This young person was quite impressive.
Qi Chan didn't continue to investigate the past matters. With his doubts resolved, he asked, "Since you came to the capital, why didn't you come to the Qi Chan residence to find me?"
"I did go." Shu Yu replied, "After arriving in the capital and seeing the white cloth hanging at the entrance of the Gong family, I was worried that something happened to Yunzheng. It was my first time in the capital, and you were the highest-ranking official I knew. Early the next morning, I went to the Qi residence to inquire about the situation. However, the gatekeeper said you weren't home, so I left."
Qi Chan furrowed his brows; he genuinely didn't know about this.
But people often came to the Qi residence to look for him, and the gatekeeper couldn't possibly report to him every visitor.
Moreover, when Shu Yu came, he only asked if Qi Chan was home. After hearing that he wasn't, Shu Yu said he would come back another time and didn't instruct the gatekeeper to convey any messages.
