Qi Chan glanced at the embroidered fan again; it was quite exquisite and didn't seem like something a servant would use. The bright colors and lively patterns also didn't match those of a married woman. So, there was a young lady living in this courtyard?
He hadn't heard that Meng Yunzheng was engaged or had concubines. Gong Ya, the sister from the Gong family, had been sentenced to death. So, where did this young lady come from?
As Qi Chan was lost in thought, he heard a knock on the door.
Zhao Xi had been preparing medicine in the courtyard, although it was quite hot there. However, as it was close to the main door, he would usually hear the sound of Meng Yunzheng and the others returning.
But at this moment, he was getting up to fetch a jar from the kitchen and didn't hear anything.
Thus, the person who opened the door was Qi Chan himself.
Just as Meng Yunzheng and Shu Yu were about to enter the courtyard, they saw the person standing at the door and were suddenly stunned. Silently, they both took a small step back.
Meng Yunzheng slowly shifted his gaze and then turned to look at Shu Yu.
Shu Yu had no time to cover her face, and she never expected such a big surprise upon returning home. She could only force a dry laugh.
Qi Chan also wore a shocked expression, looking at the two standing side by side. Observing Shu Yu's familiar and embarrassed smile, he began to doubt if his eyes were playing tricks on him due to his old age.
"Lu Xiangjun? How... how are you here? When did you come to the capital?!" Furthermore, how could she be with Meng Yunzheng? They seemed quite familiar with each other.
Shu Yu laughed awkwardly, "Minister Qi, long time no see. Why don't we... go inside and talk?"
Qi Chan was silent for a moment before stepping aside.
Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng exchanged a glance, feeling inexplicably guilty. They quickly entered the courtyard.
Zhao Xi, who was not far away, felt even more anxious as he watched the scene. He grinned at the two and then quickly disappeared back into the kitchen - he didn't know anything, really, nothing at all.
The three of them returned to the main hall, and Qi Chan's gaze once again fell on the fan.
So, this fan belonged to her.
He retracted his gaze and looked at the two in front of him. Although they hadn't said a word, their facial expressions kept changing, and it was unclear whether they were silently communicating or... coordinating their stories. He was starting to get a headache just looking at their winks and raised eyebrows.
Qi Chan cleared his throat and smiled, "Lu Xiangjun, you know Young Master Meng?"
At this critical moment, Shu Yu didn't need to hide anything anymore. Since Gong Qiu was dead, there was no need to be secretive.
So, she nodded and organized her words, "Yes, we met earlier at Dong'an Prefecture. Then, we met again last year in Jiangyuan County and became acquainted."
Qi Chan was somewhat surprised, "So early?"
In other words, they knew each other even before he did? He looked at Meng Yunzheng, then at Shu Yu, and suddenly a thought flashed through his mind. He narrowed his eyes, "That Cheng Dong..."
Shu Yu's eyelids twitched. Qishan was indeed the Minister, his perceptiveness was frightening. He immediately linked her early acquaintance with Meng Yunzheng to Cheng Dong.
She honestly nodded, "Yes, I did know early on that Cheng Dong was working for Gong Qiu. I won't hide it from you. When I was exiled to the southwest, Yunzheng was worried and followed me all the way. So when I arrived in Heichang County, he was also there. At that time, Prefect magistrate Cheng came to Zhengdao Village, and he brought some guards with him, among them was Cheng Dong."
