Qi Chan got off the carriage and glanced at the small courtyard in front of him. He nodded slightly in satisfaction. Meng Yunzheng was indeed the right person. He could enjoy prosperity and endure poverty. Such a person should not waste away in obscurity and silence.
The imperial court needed talents, especially since a number of officials had been removed due to the incident involving the Second Prince and Gong Qiu, leaving a shortage in the court.
The Prime Minister, Shao Fu, was deeply worried.
Qi Chan sighed softly and turned his head slightly. His attendant went forward to knock on the door.
After a while, hurried footsteps could be heard from inside. "Coming, coming. What's the rush? You're back so early, I thought..."
Zhao Xi opened the door, and when he looked up, his smile froze. Why weren't Meng Yunzheng and the others back yet?
The attendant who had knocked on the door nodded in acknowledgment and stepped aside, revealing Qi Chan behind him.
"Minister Qi?" Zhao Xi's eyes widened.
Qi Chan smiled and asked, "Is Meng Yunzheng staying here?"
Zhao Xi hesitated. Should he say yes or no?
"May I come in?" Qi Chan's attitude was very amiable, but the more amiable he was, the more apprehensive Zhao Xi felt.
He forced a dry laugh. Could he say no?
Zhao Xi stepped aside, "Minister Qi, please come in."
Qi Chan nodded and walked in with his hands behind his back. Zhao Xi followed behind, saying, "Is there something the Minister wants to discuss with Yunzheng? Unfortunately, he's not here. He left the city, and I don't know when he'll be back. It's getting late, and the city gates will soon be closed. If he doesn't make it back in time, he might have to stay outside the city."
Qi Chan surveyed the courtyard in front of him. It was indeed a small one, with only a few rooms. However, it was neatly organized and had a somewhat warm feeling.
Zhao Xi led him into the main hall and offered him a cup of water. Only then did Qi Chan speak, "No hurry, I can wait. If the city gates are closed and he hasn't returned, I'll come back another day."
Zhao Xi sighed inwardly. With Qi Chan here, what else could he say? He couldn't just chase him away.
He forced a smile and sat down beside him, engaging in some awkward small talk.
Just casual chitchat.
Qi Chan wanted to inquire about Meng Yunzheng's situation, what he had been doing all these years. However, whenever he brought up the topic, Zhao Xi would skillfully steer the conversation away, leaving Qi Chan somewhat amused.
What's going on? He made it seem like he was some villain, specifically coming to cause trouble for Meng Yunzheng.
But birds of a feather flock together, and all of Meng Yunzheng's friends seemed to be this clever. Not to mention Meng Yunzheng himself.
Well, forget it. If he doesn't return, he won't ask.
Qi Chan told Zhao Xi, "Doctor Zhao, go about your business. I'll sit here and have some tea while waiting for him."
Zhao Xi shook his head, "I'm not busy, I have plenty of free time."
"But I just heard you were making medicine earlier. Go ahead and continue, it's no problem," Qishan said.
Since he said that, Zhao Xi didn't want to continue dealing with his questions. It was too tiring.
He stood up decisively and went back to his work.
Qi Chan turned his head and looked around the surroundings. There weren't many things in this room; after all, they had just moved out not long ago.
Moreover, according to Meng Yunzheng, he would be leaving the capital soon, so this place was only a temporary resting spot.
As he thought this, he suddenly noticed a decorative antique fan placed in the corner. There was a woman living here too?
