Meng Yunzheng nodded affirmatively, "Yes, I'm sure."
"Good, then I grant your request." The emperor's voice rose suddenly, but he couldn't help but cough twice.
Meng Yunzheng listened to the voice and thought that the emperor could still hold on for a while.
He thought to himself, but outwardly, he knelt down with respect and gratitude to express his thanks.
With the matter settled, the morning court was no longer relevant to him, so Meng Yunzheng left the main hall.
After waiting for a while in a side hall, he heard the sound of the courtiers leaving. The morning court had been quite lengthy, and the emperor had endured it for quite a while.
One by one, the officials left the palace, discussing the proceedings of the morning court, with Meng Yunzheng being the topic of most conversations.
Meanwhile, Meng Yunzheng had already left the palace. Numerous carriages were parked outside, and he made his way through them until he stood before an inconspicuous carriage.
"He's coming out."
Sitting on the carriage shaft, Ying Xi turned around and informed the person inside the carriage.
Shu Yu lifted the curtain, and sure enough, she saw Meng Yunzheng standing before her with a smile.
Meng Yunzheng stepped onto the carriage and took a seat. The carriage then left the palace gates.
Shu Yu poured him a cup of water and waited for him to drink before asking, "How did it go?"
"The emperor agreed and allowed me to return to my hometown."
As for the other rewards and financial compensation, that would just be an added bonus.
But just thinking about the words Qi Chan said, wanting him to stay, gave him a headache.
For some reason, he had a feeling that Qi Chan might not be so willing to let him go.
However, it wasn't the right time to think about this now. Instead of heading to the small courtyard in the south of the city, their carriage was going in the opposite direction, toward the outskirts of the city.
Following Meng Yunzheng's directions, Ying Xi quickly arrived at the foot of a mountain.
Shu Yu got off the carriage, and Meng Yunzheng took out incense and paper money from the carriage. Hand in hand, they walked up the mountain.
Gong Qiu had already been beheaded the day before. The emperor didn't plan to delay the matter for too long. He deeply hated Gong Qiu; the man not only cuckolded him but also almost succeeded in taking the throne.
The emperor couldn't wait to see him punished, so that there would be no trouble in the future.
According to Shu Yu's thoughts, the emperor's health was deteriorating, and he wouldn't allow Gong Qiu to live longer than him.
Therefore, the date of Gong Qiu's execution was quickly set.
Many people attempted to rescue him, causing quite a commotion.
However, the security at the execution site was strict, and instead of freeing Gong Qiu, his supporters ended up being caught and executed alongside him.
With Gong Qiu dead, Meng Yunzheng naturally wanted to bring this good news to his mother, Song Xin.
Song Xin's tomb was located outside the city, separate from the ancestral tombs of the Gong family.
When she passed away, Gong Qiu claimed she was his concubine and brought her remains back to the capital. However, Madam Gong strongly opposed the idea, stating that Song Xin was an illegitimate child and had no right to be buried in the Gong family's ancestral tomb.
At that time, Gong Qiu had just brought Meng Yunzheng back to the capital, which had already upset Madam Gong. He didn't want to create more conflict with her over Song Xin's burial. Moreover, he was also dissatisfied with Song Xin, so he agreed to bury her separately outside the city.
For Meng Yunzheng, it was actually a good thing.
His mother belonged to the Meng family, and burying her in the Gong family's ancestral tomb would only tarnish her reputation, causing her to never rest in peace.
