Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng left the Great Li Temple and slowly walked towards the southern part of the city.
After walking for a long while, Meng Yunzheng whispered, "The last assurance?"
Shu Yu nodded solemnly, "As you said, Gong Qiu is a cunning fox. He knows it was you who accused him in front of the emperor, and he still thinks you're not his son. Other things he might not do, but dragging you to your death at the last moment is definitely within his capabilities."
She turned to look at him, "He already had few offspring, and back then, he wasn't sure if your father was still alive or if you knew his secrets. However, he still risked bringing you back and raising you, showing that he still cared about that blood relationship. I thought he would still spare your life even if he hated you."
The facts proved that Gong Qiu indeed planned to tell the emperor about Meng Yunzheng knowing his relationship with Liu Guifei.
Meng Yunzheng remained silent for a moment, "It doesn't matter. That person's... health is already deteriorating."
After dealing with Gong Qiu, most of the power would probably fall into the hands of the Fifth Prince, and the emperor likely wouldn't have the energy to bother with him.
Shu Yu smiled, "Who knows how long he can hold on? Just in case."
Others might not know, but Shu Yu knew the plot.
The emperor's health was indeed not good, but his vitality was surprisingly strong. Unfortunately, he managed to hold on.
According to the book, the emperor's death occurred during the winter snow.
It was still late summer now, which meant there were still several months left. If the emperor really wanted someone dead, wouldn't a few months be enough?
Shu Yu raised her head, "I know you don't want Gong Qiu to have a peaceful death. We don't need to rush. We'll wait until he's on the execution platform before telling him that we deceived him, and that you are a son of the Meng family. Anyway, he doesn't have the energy or time to verify it anymore. We can confidently present the evidence and make sure he dies in extreme torment, unable to rest in peace."
Meng Yunzheng chuckled at her joke, "Yes... Your plan is more reliable. Without you by my side, my plan would have been full of mistakes, and I might have almost lost my life."
Shu Yu glared at him, teasing him for making fun of her.
But the two of them did return home safe and sound.
What they didn't know was that despite being imprisoned, Gong Qiu was still able to maintain contact with the outside world.
After years of preparation, how could he willingly die like this? He had already prepared a last resort.
This last resort included being rescued from the execution ground and killing Meng Yunzheng.
From the moment he learned that Meng Yunzheng had presented the evidence to the emperor and that he wasn't his son, Gong Qiu had wanted him dead!
Meng Yunzheng had been a witness in the Supreme Court, making it difficult for Gong Qiu to take action. The best opportunity came when he was released.
Of course, Gong Qiu didn't know that Meng Yunzheng was exceptionally skilled and had the protection of the Fifth Prince. His men might not be able to take his life.
However, once those people acted, assassination attempts would be endless, and accidents would keep happening.
Now that he had met Gong Qiu face to face, the threat was extinguished.
Gong Qiu naturally wouldn't let his only son be in danger, so he withdrew his last resort and used all his efforts to escape the execution ground.
Unfortunately, the Fifth Prince wanted to use this opportunity to demonstrate his power and wouldn't tolerate any mishaps. As a result, layers of guards were set up on the execution ground, and there were countless hidden forces ready to act.
