The waiter sighed and pointed to the beggar huddled in the corner near the door, saying, "Do you see that beggar?"
Shu Yu nodded, "Yes, I saw him. I just gave him a few copper coins."
"That old beggar used to be the gatekeeper of this courtyard. When the courtyard caught fire, the female owner of the house was burned to death. He blamed himself for not being there that day and failing to save the owner. After the fire, he became crazy and spends his days guarding the door. He flies into a rage whenever anyone tries to approach the house, but unfortunately, this old beggar is quite skilled, and few can beat him."
Shu Yu was taken aback. The old beggar was originally the gatekeeper of Meng's Escort Agency? She had heard from Meng Yunzheng that the original members of the Quansheng Escort Agency had either found new paths or joined other escort agencies. As for the servants of the agency, they were not many, but they had all been taken away by Meng Yunzheng's uncle.
According to this, the old beggar should have left with Meng Yunzheng's uncle. How did he end up here?
Could it be that he had been guarding the place for the past ten years? The waiter continued, "After a couple of incidents, the county official came to investigate. They didn't drive the old beggar away but prohibited anyone from having ill intentions toward the house."
As for why the county official attached such importance to this matter, the waiter didn't know.
But Shu Yu could guess that it probably had something to do with Gongqiu.
"The old beggar is truly a loyal and pitiful person," Shu Yu remarked.
The waiter nodded, "Indeed, he is quite loyal."
Hence, Shu Yu took out a couple of silver pieces from her sleeve and handed them to the waiter, saying, "Please give this to the old beggar for me."
The waiter was taken aback, "Miss..."
Shu Yu sighed, "I'm kind-hearted and soft-hearted. I can't bear to hear such stories and see people with strong sense of loyalty suffer. Please give it to him, so he can have a good meal."
The waiter was speechless. He also had a strong sense of loyalty. Even though the business of this restaurant wasn't doing very well, he worked diligently every day and never slackened. Shouldn't he treat himself to a nice meal too?
The waiter looked at the silver pieces in his hand and almost blurted it out.
However, he held back the words when he saw that Shu Yu was only having a plate of pastries and a pot of tea in front of her.
He swiftly went to the door and placed the silver pieces in front of the old beggar, saying, "The young lady who gave you the copper coins said that you are a loyal and righteous person. She wants you to buy more food and not go hungry."
The old beggar took the silver pieces and bit on them before chuckling.
The waiter sighed and shook his head, then turned and came back.
Shu Yu continued to drink tea and eat her pastries. The waiter seemed to be eyeing the reward she gave him, and since there weren't many customers at the moment, he was quite idle and occasionally came to pour her more tea.
Shu Yu felt a bit like being served at Haidilao, where they constantly refilled your tea.
She was quite helpless but didn't mind. The owner of the restaurant noticed the situation and came over to reprimand the waiter, apologizing to Shu Yu.
However, Shu Yu waved her hand, smiling, "It's alright. I quite enjoy listening to these stories, and he tells them well."
As Shu Yu and the waiter continued talking, not just about the burned-down courtyard across the street but also other things, she discovered that the waiter knew quite a lot about Tianning County and was very familiar with its affairs.
As long as she didn't mention the Meng's Escort Agency, that vague feeling of being watched gradually disappeared.
