The beggar looked up and saw Shu Yu staring at him. He quickly extended his bowl and pleaded, "Miss, please, spare some change."
Shu Yu touched her sleeve and took out five or six copper coins, walking up to him and placing them in his bowl.
As she bent down, she suddenly felt a piercing gaze on her.
Years of caution made her trust her instincts. Her hairs stood on end, and her whole body tensed up.
Shu Yu's movements hesitated for a moment. After placing the coins, she stood up straight again without saying a word. Then, she smiled and took two steps back, nonchalantly turning away.
There was no one behind her, just a moderately sized restaurant. At this time, there were only two or three tables of customers inside, drinking and chatting while snacking on peanuts.
No one seemed to be looking in her direction, as if the feeling just now had been her imagination.
Shu Yu pursed her lips, confidently stepped forward, and entered the restaurant's main hall.
A waiter quickly approached her and asked, "Miss, would you like to have something to eat?"
Shu Yu wasn't hungry, but she ordered a plate of local specialty pastries and a pot of floral tea. Then, she found a spot near the window and sat down.
The waiter promptly brought her order and poured tea for her, smiling as he asked, "Guest, you seem unfamiliar. Are you not from around here?"
Shu Yu smiled and said, "Yes, I'm not a local. I'm passing through Tianning County because one of my servant's hometowns is nearby. She asked me to take her back to visit her family. Since I wasn't in a hurry to leave, I decided to stroll around here."
"You are indeed a kind-hearted master," the waiter responded.
Shu Yu nodded, "Yes, there are not many masters like me nowadays. I'm a softhearted person."
The waiter... didn't quite know how to respond to that.
Thankfully, he had poured the tea, so he quickly put the teapot down and was about to leave. However, Shu Yu suddenly asked, "By the way, what's the story with the courtyard across from your restaurant?"
This question brought back that feeling of being watched again.
Perhaps the person on the other side had restrained themselves this time, so the sensation only lasted for a moment before vanishing.
But Shu Yu still glanced toward the door and, while pointing at the Quansheng Escort Agency outside, quickly surveyed the surroundings. Her gaze briefly passed over the owner of the counter, and she then asked the waiter, "I'm talking about that courtyard. It was burned down like that. Why hasn't it been repaired properly? This location is quite bustling, and leaving it like this seems such a waste."
The waiter sighed and whispered, "Indeed, everyone says it's a pity. However, that courtyard was involved in a lawsuit connected to high-ranking officials in the capital. The owner of the house doesn't live in Tianning County, so it has been left as it is. Some people have tried to seize the opportunity to claim it for themselves, but none have succeeded."
The owner of the courtyard was Meng Pei, and after the fire, the government determined it to be an accident caused by his negligence. The case file stated it as an accident.
Since Meng Pei was presumed deceased, the house should have been inherited by his son, Meng Yunzheng.
However, Meng Yunzheng was taken away by Gong Qiu, and he was not Meng Pei's biological son. Thus, the courtyard belonged to Meng Pei's younger brother. He had come to Tianning County to handle the family affairs and then left afterward.
As the owner of the courtyard wasn't in Tianning County, and Meng Pei's younger brother didn't plan to sell it, the house had been left untouched.
Shu Yu was quite curious and asked, "Why have people tried to claim it but failed?"
