Upon hearing this, Xiang Weinan was greatly shocked, and his expression turned even more serious, "How could this happen? In the Great Su Dynasty, we have always upheld the distinction between the high and low, and the laws are strict. Naturally, the county princess is more distinguished than the village lord. How can we allow such a thing of insubordination to happen?"
County princess Zhang quickly shook her head, "No, county magistrate, it's not..."
Xiang Weinan didn't give her a chance to speak and asked sternly, "County princess Zhang, tell me, how did Lu Xiangjun show insubordination? Did she beat you?"
County princess Zhang hesitated for a moment and subconsciously shook her head.
"She didn't beat you? Then did she scold you?"
Again, County princess Zhang shook her head.
Xiang Weinan frowned, "If Lu Xiangjun didn't beat you and didn't scold you, then how did she show insubordination? What did she do?"
"She... she..."
Seeing that County princess Zhang couldn't speak, Xiang Weinan's brows furrowed slightly, "It seems that County princess Zhang is quite frightened. In that case, take a rest for a moment, and I'll ask Lu Xiangjun."
He then turned his head and asked Shu Yu with a serious expression, "Lu Xiangjun, what did you do to County princess Zhang?"
Shu Yu sighed, "I haven't done anything to County princess Zhang. I only scolded County princess Zhang's brother, Zhang Maolin, and had someone beat Zhang Maolin and County princess Zhang's two guards. County magistrate, am I, as a village lord, showing insubordination by scolding and beating a county lady's brother? Does County princess Zhang's brother have a higher status than me?"
Xiang Weinan was taken aback and tightly knitted his brows, "Of course not."
He glanced at County princess Zhang and fell silent for a moment. Then, he seemed to take her side and asked Shu Yu, "Lu Xiangjun, even though Zhang Maolin is just a commoner, as a village lord, you can't just beat and scold him casually. What did he do to make you take such extreme actions?"
"County magistrate, please be fair in your judgment. It was Zhang Maolin who came to our doorstep and first laid hands on my servants. Everyone present can testify to this. My servants didn't intend to retaliate at first. As a village lord, if someone comes to my door causing trouble on such an important day as my coming-of-age ceremony, I certainly can't let it go just like that, right? It was an act of self-defense, right?"
"Yes, that's right."
"Moreover, I scolded him because he, an ill-mannered person, actually came to my house to propose marriage. When his proposal was rejected, he caused trouble. Is there anything wrong with me scolding him? Any normal person wouldn't stand for it."
Xiang Weinan widened his eyes in surprise, turned to look at Zhang Maolin, and observed him for a while before nodding slightly, saying, "County princess Zhang, well... what Lu Xiangjun said is not wrong."
Her brother did indeed look rather crude and was far from being as handsome as Meng Yunzheng.
The problem wasn't just his appearance; his character was also lacking, and he deserved to be scolded.
Shu Yu asked innocently, "So, I beat and scolded Zhang Maolin because of his wrongdoing. If we talk about insubordination, shouldn't we say that Zhang Maolin disrespected me first? If County princess Zhang wants to accuse me, it could be considered a false accusation."
Xiang Weinan's expression turned solemn, "County princess Zhang, is what Lu Xiangjun said true?"
County princess Zhang wanted to deny it, but after some thought, it seemed that what Lu Xiangjun said made sense.
Indeed, her brother had been the one to make the first move, and she scolded him for it.
But... she still felt that it shouldn't have been like this.
Xiang Weinan then asked the onlookers in the crowd, "Now, let me ask all of you. You've seen everything from start to finish. Is what Lu Xiangjun said true?"
