Xiang Weinan seemed as if he hadn't noticed County princess Zhang approaching. He led Shu Yu to the front of the cart and pulled back the cloth covering it.
Now, they were in full view of everyone, and everyone watched with wide eyes.
As the cloth was pulled back, several delicate boxes were revealed underneath.
Xiang Weinan's voice was neither loud nor soft, "These two larger gift boxes are your coming-of-age ceremony gifts from Minister Yao, the Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Works."
Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Works?
Shu Yu looked at him in surprise. Wasn't Yao Tianqin just a lower-ranking official in the Ministry of Works? How did he become an Assistant Minister already?
Xiang Weinan smiled and nodded at her. Yes, Yao Tianqin had been promoted.
The original two Assistant Ministers of the Ministry of Works were both part of the Gong Qiu faction. Their immediate superior, the Chief Minister of Works, was merely a figurehead due to his age.
Thus, the entire Ministry of Works was essentially controlled by the Gong Qiu faction. Although Gong Qiu was only a third-rank official, his power was no different from that of a first-rank Chief Minister of Works.
With the current unpredictable situation in the capital, Gong Qiu was aligned with the Second Prince, and both the Fifth Prince and the Third Prince wanted to deal with him.
Gong Qiu was not an easy target, so they decided to start with those close to him.
As a result, the other Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Works was demoted, and Yao Tianqin, who was currently in the limelight, naturally got promoted.
Yao Tianqin did not belong to any faction, and he was someone who only focused on doing his job. His promotion was unimpeded.
Now that his title was mentioned by Xiang Weinan, everyone present was astonished.
Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Works giving Shu Yu her adulthood ceremony gifts?
County princess Zhang also stared at Shu Yu in shock, but Xiang Weinan's words clearly hadn't finished yet. He pointed to the three or four boxes behind and said, "These few are gifts from the Grand Tutor, Minister Qi."
Grand Tutor?
Princess Zhang gasped. She didn't know Yao Tianqin, but she was very familiar with Qi Chan.
Was it the same Minister Qi she knew? The one highly favored by the Emperor and respected even by the imperial princes and princesses when he traveled outside?
Why, why would he also send gifts to Lu Xiangjun?
Other people gulped nervously. Shu Yu's backing seemed a bit terrifying. Even someone as prominent as Minister Qi was giving her gifts. Was she the only one receiving such treatment?
Even the current County princess before them might not have such treatment.
Xiang Weinan smiled, "Minister Qi asked me to deliver a message. He said that when he was in the southwest, he had thought of preparing an coming-of-age ceremony gift for you. But later, when you presented yourself with the heat packs and were conferred as the village Lord, Minister Qi had to return to the capital for official duties and couldn't make it in time for your adulthood ceremony. He feels very sorry for it. However, your gift cannot be less, and these boxes were carefully prepared by him. He asked me to tell you to enjoy your birthday."
Shu Yu was genuinely surprised. She had a good relationship with Qi Chan, and at first, there might have been some utilitarian motives. If Qi Chan hadn't been the Grand Tutor, she probably wouldn't have had as much interaction with him as she did now.
But she didn't expect that he would remember her upcoming adulthood ceremony even after returning to the capital and being busy with official duties.
"Both Minister Qi and Minister Yao are so thoughtful."
"I don't know what's inside these gift boxes either. You can open them and see when you get back." Xiang Weinan chuckled, "Minister Qi also said that if you and your family have the opportunity to visit the capital, you must go see him."
"Alright, I will."
