Li Shi felt nauseous inside. Since she couldn't talk to Da Niu, she had to find Zhou Qiao.
As a daughter-in-law of the Lu family, Zhou Qiao naturally had to help with the chores after dinner.
She had just finished washing the dishes and wiped her hands when she saw her mother-in-law approaching.
Seeing Li Shi's unfriendly expression, Zhou Qiao's heart skipped a beat. She knew that the matter she had been avoiding would eventually have to be faced, and she sighed inwardly.
Li Shi walked up to Zhou Qiao, glared at her, and lowered her voice. "Come with me, I have something to ask you."
Zhou Qiao pursed her lips, lowered her head, and walked out of the kitchen.
Li Shi originally wanted to take Zhou Qiao to her own room to talk, but with the old lady and others present, and people in Da Niu's room, Lan Hua's room happened to be empty.
So she led Zhou Qiao through the main hall and went straight to Lan Hua's room.
To her surprise, the door to the room was slightly ajar. Li Shi was about to push the door open when she heard Lan Hua exclaim from inside, "...Really? Sister Da Ya, are you really letting me learn makeup at the shop?"
Li Shi's hand paused slightly and quickly pulled back. She listened attentively to the sounds inside.
Zhou Qiao was also slightly surprised.
The voices inside the room resumed. It was Shu Yu speaking now.
"It's true. You've always been interested in dressing up, right? Before, we didn't have any rouge or powder at home, so there was no way to dress up. But now the shop specializes in that. Isn't it a shame to miss out?"
Lan Hua's face flushed with excitement, and she grabbed Shu Yu's hand. "But... But I don't know how. Even when I watched you do makeup for others, it all looked blurry to me."
"So when you first start, you'll have to learn. If you don't know at first, it's certain that no one will ask you to do makeup, and you can only watch and learn while helping on the side. In that case, the wages won't be high. If you mind..."
Before Shu Yu finished speaking, Lan Hua hurriedly shook her head. "I don't mind. How could I mind? I'm so happy to be able to learn these things. I don't need wages at all. This is like being an apprentice, apprentices don't get paid. Look at second Uncle when he was an apprentice carpenter, he didn't have any money either."
Shu Yu smiled. "Since you're willing, then prepare for the next two days and pack your things to come to the county. But I have to make it clear beforehand, the shop has its rules. If you don't do well, even if you're my sister, I will criticize you."
"No problem. If I make a mistake, feel free to criticize me."
The two exchanged smiles and prepared to leave.
Li Shi heard the footsteps and quickly pulled Zhou Qiao to walk outside the courtyard.
After they left the main hall, Li Shi sighed deeply with a complicated expression.
How should she approach this now? Even if she knew that the estate Da Niu went to wasn't good, she couldn't possibly let him return to the county as the shopkeeper of the shop again.
They had already found work for Lan Hua. If she still complained, wouldn't she be inviting criticism upon herself?
And ultimately, it was harder for women than for men. Lan Hua hadn't even married yet, but she had a job. Even if she married in the future, she would have a skill to rely on, right? When she went to her in-laws' house, she wouldn't be at a disadvantage.
If she caused trouble again, and if Shu Yu became unhappy, not only would Da Niu lose his job, but Lan Hua would also be sent back.
Li Shi let out a heavy sigh, and Zhou Qiao asked in a low voice, "Mother, what did you want to talk to me about?"
