The problem was that there weren't enough sunflower seeds available, so the remaining land could only be planted with other crops that could grow in saline-alkali soil.
There were indeed crops with good salt-alkali tolerance, such as ramie and goji berries.
However, these crops either had a longer growth cycle or were unsuitable for planting in this season.
Sunflowers could be harvested in just over a hundred days, but what if the other crops only grew halfway? They couldn't just be cut down, right? But if they weren't cut down, there wouldn't be enough time to plant sunflowers for the next batch, and it would become a dead-end cycle.
After much thought, Shu Yuyue concluded that golden rape, also known as alfalfa, was the most suitable crop among the available options in the Da Su Dynasty.
Golden rape had high yield, could be used as food, had medicinal value, and was known as the king of forage crops.
Most importantly, it could be harvested multiple times in a year, making full use of the land without waste.
When Da Niu heard this, a smile formed on his lips. "Alright, let's plant golden rape."
He became energetic again. "I'll go back to the county tomorrow and buy the seeds for golden rape. We'll plant them as soon as possible."
"No need, I've already asked someone to help me find the seeds. They should be delivered in the next day or two."
"That works too." This way, he could have his men loosen the soil tomorrow. With such a large area, it would take quite some time to finish. "But Ah Yu, who will we sell all these golden rape to?"
That was also a big issue. After all, it was golden rape from eighty acres of land.
Shu Yu replied, "We'll sell them to Donggu County."
"Donggu County?"
"Yes, Ding Yuehua's sister-in-law has a farm in Donggu County and raises a considerable number of livestock and poultry. They are in need of forage. When Ding Yue returns, she can talk to her sister-in-law. If we can grow it, we can sell the entire batch to them."
Ding Yuehua mentioned this to her yesterday, saying that although the Wu family was involved in the livestock business, their scale wasn't large. They didn't have the vast grasslands like the other side, with abundant supplies of forage.
The local farmers here wouldn't leave their fertile land uncultivated to grow forage crops.
The Wu family planted some for their own use, but it wasn't enough. They even wanted to raise more livestock and poultry but couldn't because of the shortage of forage.
If Shu Yuyue used all the eighty acres to grow alfalfa, the Wu family would definitely be overjoyed and would take all of it.
Of course, if they didn't want it, it wouldn't be a problem either. Alfalfa could be used as food and medicine. Moreover, in the vast Dong'an Prefecture, there were surely other families engaged in the livestock business. If each family bought a small portion, it would be sold out.
Upon hearing this, Da Niu felt relieved. He had a target market and a way out. He became excited.
The siblings continued their conversation while heading back to the farmhouse.
An Ning had already explored the entire manor and was about to go find them when she saw them returning.
The little girl immediately approached. "Second Sister, can I come here often in the future?"
She knew that after today, Xiao Ya'er wouldn't be going back to the county with her. She would be staying here.
After spending these days together, the two little girls had become good friends, and she felt a bit reluctant.
Xiao Ya'er might not be able to come to the county easily, but she could come here. If Second Sister occasionally came to the estate to check on the sunflowers, she could come along.
Shu Yu nodded. "You can come whenever you want."
Zhou Qiao smiled and said, "I'll prepare a room for An Ning. Whenever she wants to come, she can stay here for a few days. Later, your Big Brother can send her back."
"Really?"
"Yes, An Ning, which room would you like to stay in? You can pick one yourself."
