Madam Fan did have objections. If they separated, she wouldn't be in charge anymore, and she would have to ask Mei Shi for money. How could that be?
At first, Madam Fan tried to persuade them, but it was futile. So she resorted to crying, causing a scene, and threatening to hang herself. It had some effect, but ultimately, the result didn't change because Mei Shi, having spent a long time with her mother-in-law, knew some of her secrets.
Mei Shi wanted to separate, or else she would end up in jail, so she decided to drag Madam down with her.
From then on, this mother-in-law and daughter-in-law had torn their faces apart.
Madam Fan was so infuriated in the past few days that she fell ill and had to continue living with the First Family.
Because the First Family received the majority of the assets in the separation, they had the responsibility to support the elderly. Although Mei Shi disliked her mother-in-law, she didn't want the Third Family to take the lion's share. Moreover, her mother-in-law had a considerable dowry and personal property that Mei Shi didn't want to miss out on.
The Third Family reached a consensus, and the separation happened quickly.
The First Family received two-thirds, while the remaining one-third was divided equally between the Second and Third Families.
Third Young Master Fan didn't care about receiving more or less. After discussing with Ding Yuehua, they decided to give Second Madam an extra room to make her more financially comfortable. After all, Mo Shi's daughter would be married in a few years, and having money would give her confidence. It would be difficult for her as a woman with children to manage on her own.
The Fan family had two kilns, and the First Family claimed the larger one. Third Young Master Fan naturally fought for the smaller one since it was his starting point.
Ding Yuehua said, "After the separation, he and I went to my parents' house and explained the situation. My father scolded us at first, but then my husband and my father talked for a long time in the study. When they came out, my father didn't say anything. He even said that if we encounter any difficulties, we should come to him."
They were later given a silver ticket worth ten thousand two hundred taels.
Shu Yu was amazed. They were truly wealthy, casually offering ten thousand two hundred taels as assistance.
The small county town had many wealthy people.
But she was genuinely happy for her friend's successful separation.
"By the way, when I went back to my parents' house this time, I asked my eldest sister-in-law for information. She said that if you want good horses, you might have to wait a bit longer. In half a month, two newly tamed wild horses will be sent over. They are said to be beautiful and just coming of age, and one of them is white. Not many people know about this yet. I asked my eldest sister-in-law to make sure to keep them for me, and I'll personally bring them back to you in half a month."
Half a month coincided with Ah Yu's coming-of-age ceremony.
Upon hearing about the good horses, Shu Yu's eyes immediately lit up.
However...
"They won't be expensive, right?"
Ding Yuehua slapped her forehead. "You're already a village lord, and yet you're so stingy. Even when buying good horses, you hesitate. No one would believe it if I told them."
Shu Yu sighed. "Since I returned from the southwest, I've been spending money on house renovations, ancestral graves, buying estates, and shops. These are all significant expenses. I'll be more generous when I earn more money in the future. For now, let's take it easy."
She added, "They won't be expensive, right?"
Ding Yuehua was on the verge of rolling her eyes. "If you don't want to pay, I'll give you the two horses."
"That won't do."
"Why not? You didn't hold us responsible for the destroyed drawings. I want to give you two horses, and you're still not happy? If you refuse again, don't come looking for me in the future."
Shu Yu had already discussed the issue of the drawings with Ding Yuehua before. It was based on the description she provided, and it had nothing to do with Minister Yao.
However, they could still use this incident to extract some compensation from Mei Shi.
