Ying Dong wanted to ask Meng Yunzheng about his experience in taking the imperial examination, but they had already arrived in the bustling courtyard.
Many guests had come today, and even though the Lu family members were all busy attending to them, the servants of the Lu family were also swamped with work.
Ying Dong saw the young ones from the Zhong family struggling to carry a sack of something to the kitchen, so he quickly said to Meng Yunzheng, "Ah lun, I have to go attend to something. We can talk later."
"Go ahead," Meng Yunzheng replied. He didn't mention that he would be leaving in the evening, so it seemed unlikely that they would have time to catch up.
However, he was happy to have reunited with his old friend after so many years. There would be more opportunities to talk in the future.
With that in mind, he began to search for Shu Yu's figure.
Shu Yu was being led by the Old Lady to meet various relatives and elders she had never seen before, like some distant aunts, second aunts, and great-uncles from the Old Lady's generation.
Shu Yu greeted each one with a smile, her face almost frozen.
But there was nothing she could do; the Old Lady was delighted.
The Old Lady whispered to Shu Yu, "You don't know, they used to come and boast to me about how successful their offspring were. Either someone was working in the town, or someone had made money, or someone had married into a family with a lot of land. But what's there to boast about? Has their family produced a village lord? Have their descendants received imperial decrees? Do they have such a grand house? I just want to let them see what truly successful descendants look like."
Shu Yu was speechless, but it was clear that the Old Lady had been pent up for a long time and now wanted to show off.
Well, as long as her grandmother was happy.
Today, there were many guests because it wasn't just Shu Yu's coming-of-age ceremony; it was also a housewarming celebration.
So, the workers who had come to renovate the house were present, and some people from Shishi Village, who had a good relationship with the Lu family, also came to congratulate them.
Fan Zhongzheng, as the village head of Shishi Village, was currently surrounded by a crowd, happily munching on the snacks in his hand.
There were also relatives from the Li and Liang families, whom Shu Yu had only heard the Old Lady talk about before but hadn't met until now. The character of these two in-laws was quite good, but they hadn't shown up until today.
Finally, Shu Yu also saw Cui Hua's son, Lai Yuan. When Shu Yu officially became a member of the family last year, this child couldn't come because he was sick. Now that they met again, he had grown another year older.
Lai Yuan had just turned five, holding his parents' hands and shyly addressing Shu Yu as "aunt." Then he hid behind Cui Hua, feeling bashful.
Shu Yu found it amusing and gave him a few candies. He ran off with Da Bao and the others to the pond to look at the fish.
Although Lai Yuan was the youngest among the children, he was a bit older than Bao Ya and Quan Quan.
This child had a somewhat introverted personality but was quite polite, thanks to Cui Hua's teachings. When the children ran ahead, he saw that Bao Ya was lagging behind and looked a bit anxious. He quickly stopped and went back to hold her hand, walking slowly with her.
This child would definitely have a bright future.
Shu Yu smiled and withdrew her gaze, but just then, Ding Yuehua came over with Kong Zhiyou by her side.
However, Shu Yu felt that Kong Zhiyou's smile seemed a bit forced.
Thinking that she might have neglected something, Shu Yu heard Ding Yuehua say, "Ah Yu, I just took Zhiyou for a tour around your house. The house is so beautifully renovated, especially the thatched restroom—it truly opened my eyes. When I get my own house built, I'll ask your father to do the renovation for us."
Shu Yu laughed, "That sounds good! I'll tell my father, and he'll have a new business opportunity soon."
Note: "thatched restroom" is a restroom with a thatched roof.
