However, Zhou Qiao shook her head.
She genuinely thought it was good. She never liked crowded places. Whether it was the village or the county town, they were indeed lively, but there were also many busybodies who liked to gossip and meddle in her life.
Half a year after getting married, they started urging her to have children, saying that she should go back and take care of her mother-in-law, asking if she made a lot of money managing the store and why she didn't buy nice things for her family. Occasionally, relatives would come and either ask to borrow money or ask for a meal.
Zhou Qiao was annoyed. She wished she could just go to a place with nobody else but her and Da Niu. It would be best if no one saw them.
If Shu Yu were here, she would probably understand Zhou Qiao's situation.
Her sister-in-law had social anxiety.
So when Da Niu said that the estate was far away, Zhou Qiao actually felt relieved.
But Da Niu thought she was just accommodating him and worried that she was deliberately saying this to make things easier for him.
He went to see Zhou Qiao, but she kept her head low, and he couldn't see her expression clearly.
Da Niu put down the sunflower stalks in his hand and quickly approached her, grabbing her hand.
Surprised, Zhou Qiao looked up and heard him say, "Don't worry, even though it's far, Ah Yu told me today that she will provide a cart for the estate, so we won't have to walk when we go into the city. When we earn more money in the future, we can buy a house wherever you want to live."
Zhou Qiao was stunned for a moment and couldn't help but laugh. "Living on the estate, I really think it's good. No one will disturb us, and I'll be very happy."
"Yes, really?" Seeing her expression, Da Niu realized she wasn't just trying to please him. Feeling a little embarrassed, he quickly let go of her hand.
It was Zhou Qiao who found it strange. "Why are we suddenly talking about buying a house?"
Da Niu turned away from her and started working again. "Third Uncle came to Ah Yu today to borrow money. He wants to buy a house in the county and probably won't return to Shishi Village anymore. Ah Yu also asked me if I wanted to buy one, and she would lend me the money, but I declined."
He had saved a little bit of silver, but it wasn't much.
After all, they had only been married for half a year, and most of the money he earned before getting married was given to Li Shi. When they got married, he wanted Zhou Qiao to have a decent wedding, so he secretly used his private savings to buy some things for her.
He even hired a cart to go to the wedding, for which he was scolded by Li Shi.
So now he didn't have much silver left. He had been working as the store's manager, and A Yu paid him three taels of silver every month.
For an ordinary family, that was already considered quite wealthy.
However, Da Niu hadn't separated from his family, and according to the unwritten rules in Jiangyuan County, at least two-thirds of the money had to be given to Li Shi.
But since Da Niu and his wife didn't live with his family and had additional expenses for their living and meals in the county, it was impossible for them to give all the money to Li Shi. Later, Lu Dasong intervened and they started giving one-third of the money.
On one hand, their family had lost a source of labor, leading to lower crop yields. On the other hand, their Lan Hua were getting married, and Er Niu had to go to school. As the eldest brother, Da Niu couldn't just let things go.
Fortunately, two taels of silver were enough for them to live very well.
But it had only been five or six months, and if they calculated it, having ten taels of silver was already pretty good.
With only ten taels of silver, how could they buy a house? Ah Yu also had many expenses.
Zhou Qiao was still shocked that third uncle's family wanted to buy a house in the county. But after listening to Da Niu's analysis, she immediately nodded and said, "It's right to refuse."
