Lu Sanzhu observed carefully for a moment, his confusion deepening. "Something good? These few plants are not only short, but the flower heads are small too. What's so good about them?"
"But these can be used for oil extraction." Shu Yu's eyes lit up as she plucked out a seed. Although the seed was small, it was plump and had a high oil content.
Lu Sanzhu widened his eyes. "You mean these can be used for oil extraction?"
Oil, that's valuable.
Currently, both vegetable oil and lard were expensive. In the past, when the family's living conditions were poor, they could only use a few drops of oil when cooking, literally just two drops, barely any oil at all.
Although life had improved now, oil was still expensive.
And now Ah Yu was saying that these things could be used for oil extraction? Weren't they only meant for stir-frying?
He couldn't help but reach out and pluck two seeds. "How much oil can be extracted from one flower head?"
Shu Yu didn't know. They would only find out after extracting the oil.
When she first received the sunflower seeds, she noticed that there were different sizes of seeds. The smaller ones were oil-bearing sunflowers, with a high oil content. When they were grown in the future, that would be the main source of income.
Later, when she asked Da Niu to try planting them, she had him plant both edible sunflowers and oil-bearing sunflowers separately. Now that both types had grown, and were even growing well, how could Shu Yu not be happy?
"Alright, let's cut the flower heads first." Shu Yu suppressed her excitement and quickly got to work.
While Lu Sanzhu was slacking off, Da Niu had already cut several flower heads.
The backyard wasn't very big, and they had only planted a limited number of sunflowers, so it didn't take long to finish cutting them.
Whether it was due to the sunflower seeds being selectively screened or Da Niu's careful care, despite the unfavorable weather during planting, the flower heads were large, and the seeds were plentiful and plump—a delightful sight.
After cutting the flower heads, the three of them removed the seeds and put them in a basket.
They filled almost half a basket with the seeds from both types of sunflowers.
After plucking them, they still needed to be sorted. Some shells were empty and couldn't be used.
Fortunately, there weren't many like that, so after removing some of the bad ones, the remaining seeds could be used for planting.
"Bug brother, if we plant all of these, how many acres of land can we cover?"
"Less than twenty acres."
It was a bit less, but there was no other choice. They only had this many seeds.
They would start with twenty acres first. With the current favorable weather, they would mature in about three months. They could then plant another batch. It would still be early autumn then, and the temperature in Jiangyuan County wouldn't be too cold, so planting wouldn't be a big issue.
If it got too cold, they could try using a greenhouse.
Shu Yu calculated in her mind and left all the seeds to Da Niu. She entrusted him with the matters regarding the estate.
Just as she was thinking about it, they heard voices outside the store.
Da Niu listened for a moment. "It sounds like Qiao Qiao is back."
Not only Zhou Qiao, but the young miss who now went by the name Lu Shu You was also there.
As they chatted, the two of them entered the backyard and were surprised to see the three of them covered in dirt. "What happened to you guys?"
After working for a long time, their clothes were dirty. Lu Shu You quickly stepped forward and brushed the dirt off Shu Yu's clothes.
Zhou Qiao looked at the somewhat unfamiliar backyard and paused. "Did you cut all the flower heads?"
"Yes, they're all cut. Once the estate is settled, we can start planting." Shu Yu washed her face and then asked the two of them, "Why did you come here?"
Zhou Qiao replied, "The store has been closed for a few days, it's time to reopen. I thought Lu Shu You could come and check the accounts first. The store will be under her management from now on."
Lu Sanzhu looked bewildered. "Lu Shuyou, who is Lu Shuyou?"
