Shu Yu was momentarily stunned. "You..."
Jiang Gongzi looked up at the mountain. "You want to go to that forest, right? I'll go too. I'm still the master of the manor, and I can't ignore Little Ya'er's disappearance."
Shu Yu looked at him intently and understood. Jiang Gongzi must be aware of what that place was.
The black market wasn't a secret, at least not to the wealthy families in Jiangyuan County.
Jiang Gongzi himself was a major landowner. Even if the harvest on hundreds of mu of land wasn't good, he could endure it for four or five years of experimentation. Clearly, money wasn't an issue for him.
Moreover, the black market was only two kilometers away from his manor. It would be strange if he didn't know about it.
So Shu Yu didn't refuse him. She turned to Da Niu and Lu Sanzhu and said, "You two stay here and explain the situation to the officials when they arrive later. Also, keep an eye on Tang."
After speaking, she let Ying Xi set off.
Da Niu rushed out but only saw the back of the mule cart.
He couldn't help but furrow his brows, and Lu Sanzhu patted his shoulder. "What are you doing?"
"I should have gone with them. If it's just Shu Yu and Jiang Gongzi, just the two of them..." So many people saw it now, and it wouldn't be good for Shu Yu.
But Lu Sanzhu didn't care. "So what? Isn't that servant named Ying Xi, or is it Ying Bei, following them?"
Da Niu thought about it and realized Lu Sanzhu was right. It wasn't just the two of them alone.
So he reentered the courtyard and watched Tang with a serious expression.
Shu Yu and Jiang Gongzi walked slowly along the way. Even though they weren't in a hurry, they couldn't find any trace of Little Ya'er.
In truth, Shu Yu had prepared for the worst outcome, but she couldn't help but feel reluctant.
Before long, the mule cart arrived at the entrance to the bamboo forest.
Shu Yu got off the cart and started climbing the steps.
However, after walking only a short distance, she noticed that the forest looked different from before. It seemed... more heavily guarded, with stricter surveillance.
Shu Yu felt puzzled and took a few more steps forward, but someone stopped them.
The person glanced at the two of them and asked, "Do you have business going up there?"
Suppressing her surprise, Shu Yu quickly replied, "We're searching for someone. Have you seen a girl of about five years old? She's a child from the tenant's house in the manor ahead. She ran away two days ago, and her whereabouts are unknown."
The person pursed their lips and remained silent for a moment before nodding. "I've seen her."
Shu Yu and Jiang Gongzi's faces lit up. "Where is she?"
"Two days ago, just at daybreak, that little girl did come here, but we drove her away. She headed in that direction. If you're looking for her, you might try over there. Don't go up, entry is prohibited here."
"Drove her away?" Shu Yu took a deep breath and almost couldn't help but swear.
She gritted her teeth, turned around, and started walking. Jiang Gongzi hurriedly followed.
Following the guard's words, the two of them walked towards the foot of the mountain on the left. After a few steps, Shu Yu turned around and glanced back. She wasn't mistaken; two more guards had appeared there, watching them vigilantly.
She asked Jiang Gongzi, "The entrance on this side seems different from when I came here last time. Do you know what's going on?"
"You don't know?" Jiang Gongzi looked surprised. He thought Shu Yu knew about the black market and would understand the reason.
Shu Yu shook her head. "To be honest, I left Jiangyuan County last year due to some matters and only returned a few days ago. I'm not familiar with the changes that have occurred here."
