Although the workload decreased, there was still work to be done.
Sometimes when carpenters couldn't find helpers, they would ask him to lend a hand. So Liang Wangsheng's days were still going well.
He got along well with Lu Erbai and would occasionally come to help out. Although the two families didn't socialize as much as they used to, they still maintained some contact.
"Why didn't my father look for him this time?" Shu Yu wondered. If they had such a cooperative and compatible partner, working together with her father would undoubtedly be twice as efficient.
Lu Dasong replied, "This friend of mine, Wangsheng, only has one daughter."
"No able-bodied laborer, huh?" Shu Yu suddenly realized, but then furrowed her brows, "Then why did he come to me? Did he want to find work in the county?"
Lu Dasong sighed, "Because his family has no land."
Shu Yu was taken aback, and her footsteps halted, "Why?"
"Liang's family only has one daughter. They wanted her to take care of her parents in their old age and find a son-in-law. But how many capable men can be found as son-in-laws? Either they come from families with many siblings and struggle to make ends meet, or they lack ambition and have poor character. The latter is naturally unacceptable to the Liang family, so they found someone from a family with ten or so siblings."
That person was brought back, and life was better for him in the Liang family. However, after enjoying a couple of good years, he was enticed into gambling.
"Gambling?" Shu Yu furrowed her brows.
Lu Dasong nodded, "He accumulated a lot of debt outside, and the gambling establishment naturally came knocking to collect. The Liang family only then found out that he claimed to be working as a short-term laborer in the county, but he was actually gambling recklessly in the gambling establishment. His hand was almost severed by someone when things went awry."
That son-in-law's parents didn't have any money; otherwise, they wouldn't have married off their son like that.
The gambling establishment found the Liang family. At that time, Liang's daughter had just given birth and was already weak. When the thugs from the gambling establishment arrived, they threatened to sell her baby if the debt wasn't repaid.
Both the mother and daughter were terrified. One was still in her confinement period, and the other was still an infant. How could they withstand such a fright?
Liang Wangsheng had no choice but to gather all the family's money. But it wasn't enough, so eventually, they had to sell their fields.
Now they only had one acre of land left, and life became difficult for them.
Liang Wangsheng had to search for work everywhere, but many people knew about the situation. They were afraid that the thugs from the gambling establishment wouldn't give up and might cause trouble for them, so they didn't dare hire him.
After all, there were plenty of young and strong short-term laborers available. They didn't need him specifically.
"He's son-in-law, what about him?" Shu Yu asked, furrowing her brows.
Lu Dasong snorted, "He ran away, with a woman who had taken all the family's belongings."
"He's a gambler, and there's a woman willing to run away with him?" Shu Yu was astonished.
"Although he's a gambler, he has a rare handsome appearance. Some people are shallow and only care about his appearance. They are easily swayed by a few sweet words and don't care about anything else."
It was truly unfortunate for the Liang family. When that son-in-law was with them, he couldn't even eat enough and wore tattered clothes, so it was hard to see any good looks.
But after coming to the Liang family and enjoying a good life for a few years, his appearance drastically changed, becoming a rare handsome man in the vicinity.
Lu Dasong said, "This happened a few months ago, just after your family returned. Your father didn't know about it yet. I guess he thought that during the busy farming season, his son-in-law would take care of the few acres of land at home, so he didn't look for him."
