I’m pretty sure that this is exclusive to the arbiter, who, by their very nature, are carrying more weight than they can possibly handle, and so they must burn the Phaea to move under their own power.

I’ve assumed that he just does it automatically and is good enough to be impowering his images constantly now

In theory, he was using all of his liquid aether to fuel the image physicalizations inside his body. It also required emotion, something he didn’t used to be good at. It definitely doesn’t feel like a good reason for him not to pursue ways to make more liquid (and eventually crystal) aether so he’d have a surplus, but it probably fell into the category of “Rand has too many things going on and these aren’t so important so let’s just quietly ignore them until the story needs them”

Random thought: Whatever happened to Randidly purifying liquid aether and using it as a big image power up? That seems to have been dropped entirely and I can’t remember if there’s a reason for that or…?

Hmmm... very interesting. I really hope Randidly doesn't go this route of tying up all his power with Phaea until he can't use it without destroying people. That would be annoying.
