Ok, didn't realize before that giving up his ability to recognize faces would also apply to his memory. Now that we have that, it's pretty obvious the reason for it was to take away how haunted he was about Hellen's lifeless face. He would have felt guilty about giving up his recognition of Hellen if it was called out specifically, so it generalized in order to even excuse him from the feelings of guilt. The fate piece is being a lot more gentle with him this time.
