Maybe one reason it feels Canadian is that it was actually shot in Canada, even though it is set in Pittsburgh. It’s invariably going to be of its time like most things set in the present of whenever it was made. And I think the relationship between Justin and Brian is supposed to be uncomfortable (I’m not sure a show like this could be made today for that reason). Michael and Brian‘s friendship is supposed to go back well into high school; there were at least three novels written as prequels to the series that show the two characters as teenagers, college students, and young adults. Of the original cast members, the actors playing Emmett (Peter Paige) and Justin (Randy Harrison) are both gay; Thea Gill, who plays Lindsay, is bisexual; Robert Gant, who joined the show in its second season as a character named Ben, is also gay. As far as I know, all of the other main actors are straight.
