Tutorial 102 - The Fibrous Joints
🕑 Added 2016-04-13 05:00:28 +0000 UTC Fibrous joints are held together (fixed) and therefore not as important to us artists as the synovial joints, but still noteworthy. These joints are connected with fibrous tissue of varying length.
Fibrous joints are notable because they join some important bones together.
The three types of fibrous joints
Sutures
So-called because they look similar to stitches, suture joints are found between the bones of the skull, the "suture joints of the cranium".
Gomphosis
Gomphos means 'bolt' in Greek. These joints are only found holding the teeth to the mandible or maxilla and might only move slightly over time.
Syndesmosis
Syn-desmos (With-band). The syndesmosis joints have very slight movement due to the fibers being a little longer than they are for other joints.
They are found joining two bones in the arm, the ulna and the radius, and two bones in the leg, the tibia and fibula.
