Top 3 Free Photoshop Alternatives for Artists
🕑 Added 2025-06-04 00:48:46 +0000 UTCI often talk about the tools I use in my creative process, and as many of you know, Photoshop is my go-to for polishing illustrations, painting details and layering effects—especially when working over 3D renders or combining them with hand-drawn elements.
However, it’s important to acknowledge that Photoshop is very expensive—particularly for those who are just beginning or exploring digital art casually.
The good news is that you don’t need Photoshop to create professional, compelling digital artwork. Whether you’re focused on 2D illustration, concept art, or integrating 3D elements into your designs, there are excellent free alternatives available that offer a comparable experience.
Here are a few I highly recommend:
🟢 Photopea
https://www.photopea.com
This is a browser-based editor that mirrors Photoshop's interface and functions.
✅ Opens and edits PSD files
✅ Layer-based editing, masking, adjustment layers—all familiar tools
✅ No need to install anything—just open your browser and start
Perfect for painting over 3D renders or editing textures, especially if you're using any of the base assets I’ve shared in earlier posts.
🟣 GIMP
https://www.gimp.org
A powerful, open-source desktop app for digital illustration and photo editing.
✅ Great for layering, compositing, and digital painting
✅ Fully customizable interface and plugin support
✅ Supports pressure-sensitive tablets
It's a little less intuitive than Photoshop at first, but it’s incredibly versatile once you get the hang of it.
🟡 Krita
https://krita.org
Tailor-made for digital painters and illustrators.
✅ Exceptional brush engines and stabilization
✅ Ideal for stylized art, concept illustration, and even comics
✅ PSD support and layer blending modes
If you're mainly focused on illustration or painting, Krita is arguably the best free tool available today.
If you're passionate about creating digital art—whether you're starting from scratch or enhancing 3D bases, or anything else—you now have everything you need to get started without spending a cent. Enjoy!
