Hostile Halls

Davie lingered by his locker, spinning the dial on his combination lock with shaky fingers. He kept his head down, hoping to avoid attention. It was a strategy he’d mastered over the years— being invisible —but today wasn’t his lucky day.
“Hey, Quickshot!”
The nickname landed softly, almost conversationally, but Davie felt it like a sharp tap on the shoulder. He didn’t turn around.
“Still working on that lock?” Derrick leaned against the locker beside Davie’s, his grin casual but predatory. “You’ve been at it a while. Overthinking it again?”
Davie’s fingers stilled. “It’s just stuck,” he muttered.
“Stuck,” Derrick echoed, drawing out the word. “Man, that’s you in a nutshell, huh? Always stuck. Too much in your head, trying to figure out what to do. You ever think about just... letting it go? You know, seeing where things land?”
The lock clicked open, but the tension in Davie’s chest didn’t ease. He opened the door and started rummaging through his books, hoping Derrick would take the hint and leave.
But Derrick stayed. He always stayed.
“Speaking of perfect moves,” Derrick said, his tone almost thoughtful, “how’s that Lucy chick doing? You two still hanging out?”
Davie’s hand faltered mid-reach. “Yeah,” he said, his voice careful.
Derrick chuckled softly. “Good for you, man. I mean, she’s cool — way out of your league, but cool.” He tilted his head, pretending to consider. “You ever wonder what she sees in you?”
Davie’s stomach dropped. He turned slightly, his face a mask of forced calm.
"She likes me…" he said quietly, like he was trying to convince himself.
"Get along, huh?" Derrick's voice drips with mock sincerity. "That's cute. Real cute. But come on, Quickshot. You can't seriously think that's enough, right? It definitely isn’t what you’re packing below the belt!"
Davie slams his locker shut, the sound reverberating through the now-emptying hallway. He turns to face Derrick, summoning what little courage he can muster.
"What’s your point, Derrick?" he asks, his voice barely above a whisper.
“No point,” Derrick said, raising his hands like he was innocent. “Just saying, she’s got that whole sharp, confident vibe, you know? Like, she could have anyone she wanted. And you...” He let the sentence trail off, his smile widening as he saw the flicker of doubt cross Davie’s face.
Davie looked back into his locker, gripping the edge of the door so tightly his knuckles turned white. “She likes me,” he said quietly, like he was trying to convince himself.
“Sure, sure,” Derrick said, nodding along. “But for how long? I mean, you’re a nice guy, don’t get me wrong. But Lucy? She’s not exactly the type to wait around for someone to get their act together. She’s got options.”
“Shut up,” Davie muttered, his voice tight.
“Relax, Squirt,” Derrick said, laughing. “I’m just saying what you’re already thinking, right? You keep second-guessing yourself, overanalyzing everything... Eventually, someone like Lucy’s gonna get tired of waiting for you to figure it out.” He stepped back, adjusting his bag over his shoulder. “But hey, maybe I’m wrong. Maybe she’s into the whole ‘puppy dog’ thing.”
Derrick walked away, leaving Davie standing frozen at his locker. The noise of the hallway faded into the background as Derrick’s words looped in his mind.
He’s right. You’re not enough.
Davie shut his locker door quietly, his chest hollow and heavy at the same time. He tried to shake the thoughts, to remind himself of Lucy’s smile when they talked, her teasing smirk, the way she seemed to see through people without making them feel exposed. He clung to that thought like a lifeline, but even then, doubt crept in.
What if Derrick was right? What if Lucy was just waiting for him to mess up, to prove he wasn’t enough?
With his bag slung over his shoulder, Davie made his way out of school, his head down. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he pictured Lucy, her bright eyes and playful grin. He clung to the thought, but the weight of doubt dragged it down, leaving him unsure of how long he could keep it afloat.

Do you plan to make something in the future where Lucy confronts Derrick?

I've definitely gotta give some thoughts to that - how they would interact. Derrick tends to play things non-chalant when confronted... And I'm not actually too sure how Lucy would dress him down in that context.

I would love to see an animation or some writing of Lucy telling Derrick off. I know theres one of her hitting him with a chair lol
