In an earlier Patreon vlog I mentioned something about doing a big original album project where I only publish original music in the style of video game music archetypes for a while. I still am into the idea, but have decided to hold off on launching the project a bit while I figure out some other stuff going on in my life first. For now, I've released "The Descent", which is a prologue-type composition! Pretty different from my other compositions or things that I've released, but I think you'll find something to enjoy.
I recently got my hands on a bass trombone, thanks to Patreon funding, and by doing so, completed the total big band instrumentation collection! Recording big band music is always fun, and while I'd obviously prefer to do it with a real band, that has a lot of associated logistics that complicate the situation. For my own little projects like this, playing all the instruments in a big band at home as a multitrack is a nice way to make things work.
I'm also uploading this not on a Saturday! For those of you who might not know, I've had an upload schedule on YouTube where I upload new videos at 9:30 AM PT for the LONGEST time now, maybe 5 or 6 years? I'm experimenting with not sticking to that schedule for a few reasons.
- 1. It kinda feels like it's time for a change? The videos I want to make are getting increasingly complex, and sometimes take a lot of time.
- 2. I don't like the feeling of having to "get something out" to meet the arbitrary deadline. It's not just that it's an unpleasant feeling for me, but it also usually results in a sub-par video for you guys to enjoy, and I don't want to make that a habit.
- 3. When I distribute my music to Spotify, sometimes the process can take quite some time, and the duration of that process is largely out of my control. I think it makes more sense to wait to upload the video until the song is published on Spotify so people don't have to leave comments like "Spotify when?", haha.
I'll keep experimenting this with upcoming videos and see if it sticks :)
Hope you all enjoy this, and get to see another side of my compositional style! I think I'm finally going to tackle the Xenoblade 2 Torna Battle theme next - I've been working on a transcription / generating ideas for a while, and I think I'm finally ready to give that song an arrangement that it deserves! Stay tuned :)

When you've spoken about creating jazz for video games which aren't specifically a *jazz* genre piece, I've wondered what that would sound like. I usually think of jazz as always having a certain "cool", which maybe pigeonholes the sound into certain time periods or settings. But here's an answer! Really neat how this song manages to simultaneously be jazz and have the cinematic, narrative quality that we expect from "traditional" soundtracks.
