January Dormitory Diary Entry - Sakurai
🕑 Added 2025-02-26 10:21:33 +0000 UTCHappy New Year! Wishing you all the best for this year. Apologies once again for the late update on my diary.
This entry is actually about something that happened over six months ago... During a company training session, I had the chance to practice drawing various patterns of walking and running animations. One piece of feedback I received repeatedly from the veteran animator guiding us was about the angle of the feet. When drawing diagonal walking or running, I kept making the feet turn sideways relative to the perspective. I struggled to express the compression of the cross-section correctly. Even when I thought I’d nailed it, their corrections would reveal that the feet were still turning awkwardly in the space.
Ever since then, I’ve started paying close attention to diagonal walking scenes whenever I watch anime. I hate to admit it, but I’ve noticed that even in TV anime, it’s not uncommon for the feet to end up turning sideways in these situations.
I’d encourage everyone to take a closer look at how feet are animated in walking scenes when watching anime. This isn’t about pointing out mistakes or criticizing animators, it’s the opposite. When you see perfectly executed foot movements that align with the perspective, it’s a testament to the incredible attention to detail and skill of the animator.
We often focus on flashy action sequences or dramatic moments, but I think it’s equally important to appreciate the subtle, everyday animations that bring a sense of realism and life to a scene.
(Embarrassingly, I wrote this diary entry back in June. Looking at the accompanying sketch now, it’s not very clear, is it...?)
