Wifey and I were talking about this subject before I remembered this episode. She did an amazing thing and went to the logical extreme of Nazism: Jews are subhuman. That Jews are subhuman is a lie. If you tell a Nazi, “Yes, I am harboring Jews,” you are participating in the lie that Jews are subhuman. 🤯 Good work wifey. Participate in Truth; “lie” to the Nazi scum.

I have the same instincts as Destin, and I am really bad about just making things up that make me feel like I am not inflicting pain on other people. I had never really thought about it, because often I actually do have things I need to do instead, but I want to make other people feel more important by making up things that seem more important. Now that I think about it, that is the dumbest thing ever, and I will not do it anymore. 😂 I think both Matt and Destin are correct that nuancing things is the way to go on this, so I will try that and report back if it blows up in my face. Also, Matt's point that lying to protect someone is a very different thing, and causes huge problems with the 'always telling the truth' idea. There is a fascinating discussion of this in the book Les Miserables, which tackles exactly this problem, if anybody is looking for an excuse to read that book.
