The sound of dozens of men firing automatic weapons doesn’t sound like that. It sounds like an explosion for as long as the guns are firing. That was what it sounded like the moment he finished his speech. It was quiet for only a moment after the raspy man spoke then it sounded like an explosion went off as they fired indiscriminately at our house.
I don’t think a single bullet could kill me, well, a single bullet from anything but a sniper rifle at least. I bet a thousand could though, I bet a hundred could at my current level. As dozens of people were firing thousands of bullets every minute I couldn’t help but feel slightly annoyed my father hadn’t told me about the spies in our midst.
I guess he was waiting for the perfect time to ambush them to get the most benefit but I bet he wasn’t expecting the enemy to come at us with this much force. This was clearly two or three families worth of men here attempting to kill us, that isn’t accounting that almost half of our own men were spies. If I didn’t start this fight the chances of it happening soon and us losing were far higher than he’d have predicted.
If these morons were just indiscriminately firing on a building clearly built to survive this type of assault then it shows that they didn’t have a very smart leader. They were effectively denting the first inch of an eight-inch chunk of stone and rebar, we’d be more likely to be starved out of our spot before they managed to penetrate it with bullets.
Our walls might be able to survive mortar fire, that’s how strong they were. I listened to the assault rifles starting to sputter as more and more of them ran out of ammo. They should have known that but no good plan survives contact with the enemy. My father must have been running counterintelligence as our men began their counterattack.
Two men followed underground paths that brought them out on either side of the compound. Simultaneously lifting up their hidden trap doors both began to fire at the mobsters who stood out in the open like you’d see in a movie. Dozens were quickly whittled down to twenty as they finally fired back at the two men wounding one.
Both hid again pulling the trap door closed as the injured one had help from inside the tunnels. A few mobsters ran over but the trap doors were impossible to open from the outside. Once they were distracted on the sides, panels opened up from the front and the two hidden on the second level began to fire down on the remaining twenty mobsters.
It was another bloodbath with most of the remaining being riddled with bullets. Only a handful were left as they began the counterattack. The leader somehow survived as he yelled out in clear fear. “R-retreat!” They made it outside the compound, which was right when the last attack struck. This time the bodyguards on our side aimed for crippling injuries as my father would want to get as much information out of the rest as possible.
I unconsciously gulped as I watched this all through perfectly placed cameras around the compound from the security monitors that sprung up from the walls the moment the original gunfire ended. I forgot how my father had become so famous. His nickname in the underworld was Architect. He devised the downfall of more than a half dozen other families and that list was likely going to increase after he drained all the information from his new hostages.
I originally thought he was unprepared but I was clearly wrong, my father had everything handled from the very beginning and my escalating things only sped up his plans. He began making calls the moment he knew we were safe as with the failure of the plan all his subterfuge and intention to kill the ones he knew were involved in the attack already.
A bodyguard for a different head mobster looked down at his watch that had begun blinking and immediately turned to the man who was mid-conversation with his wife and blew his brains out. Another planted a bomb in the mobster's bunker and as the man made it into his saferoom the infiltrator set the bomb off killing him and his entire family.
More than four similar situations happened as we somehow had perfect footage of everything happening from the cameras as if this was my father's plan from the very beginning. He clicked his teeth as he saw one of his car bombs had malfunctioned only scorching the mafia don's skin off as he attempted to crawl to safety. As if they weren’t betting on the suffering of my father's rivals he turned to my mother and handed her a crisp one-hundred-dollar bill.
I was being raised to take over for him but once I got sick those plans fell through. Even if I was twice as smart as my father, no one would follow the instructions of a bedridden child. No, now that I was functioning again I could take over his job but that wasn’t something I wanted for myself anymore. I wasn’t the young child who wanted to follow in his father's footsteps. I was a child-at-heart older man who wanted to explore the world and the nen system that even my father knew very little about.
I had decided as I saw yet another mobster be struck by a knife in the back on the train as he tried to escape the country that I was going to leave my house soon. I needed to get stronger, I couldn’t compete with my father's intellect and scheming but if I grew powerful enough then I wouldn’t have to worry about being backstabbed like him. Most of the men who just attempted to kill him he worked with previously, who knew how many actual trustworthy people were in the mobster business.
