ironically, in our real world timeline, the church of england was the first group in europe to actually declare witchcraft not only a thing but criminalized it with Henry the VIII's Witchcraft Act of 1542. (the catholic church taught that only god could perform magic/miracles, thus witches could not exist, and anyone who made an accusation of witchcraft was actually prosecuted for *heresy*) given the same act also removed a lot of civil legal protections the catholic church had previous enjoyed in england even after the split, it is thought that the Act was in large part meant to help in persecution of catholics within England.
