I'd love to see a video that compares and contrasts the monist concepts that run through such diverse systems of thought as Sufism, Advaita Vedant, Gnostic thought, and so on. The contrasts are important of course but what astonished me was the similarity given how separated by time, culture, and contest these systems are

Please do Alevism. I think it's one of the most interesting sects in Islam. I even can't decide whether it's Islam or not. Women does participate in religious services mixed with men (cem). It's forbidden for us to go to mosque and pray. Sometimes people drink wine for commemorating Ali. Some Christian figures are also accepted as saints such as Elijah and George. As trivia, The Janissaries had to be Bektashi for initiation. And some Christians converted to Alevism en masse to escape acrocities which, funnily, another persecuted belief itself. Also, the main lodge is in Albania rather than Turkey because Atatürk banned lodges.

I love Ramon Llull, and really want to cover him at some point.
Philipp Blume
I would love to see a video that covers Ramon Llull (Raimundus Lullus). I know that’s a tall order but maybe he’s already on your radar anyway. Keep up the excellent work!

Hi Philip. You asked a few weeks ago about other ideas for videos. I gave you some suggestions then. But I'd been thinking over the past few weeks about three other religious figures that I'd be interested in getting your take on: Hafez of Shiraz, Origen of Alexandria - especially his ideas on reincarnation and Shams-i-Tabrizi. If you could do something on those, it would be really cool. Thanks, Brian

How about a video about the Black American Muslim tradition? A video about African-American religion in general would also be interesting.
Azadeh Rasooli
Imam Mahdi

Shamanism? It would be a bit of a departure from your usual focus on specific historical figures and texts in established religions. It's as much an anthropological subject as it is a religious studies subject. The are a lot of controversies to explore, such as whether the term shamanism can even be properly applied outside of a very specific context. But I'd be very interested to hear your take on some of those issues. Michael Harner is a good writer to start with if you're interested.

What about the religions, customs, beliefs, and worldviews of Amazonian tribes (can pick tribe or be more general)?

Cool topics! Thanks!

I've definitely considered traveling and making videos on location, so to say!
Filip Holm
That's a great idea I hadn't though about. Just a general video on the Essenes could be cool, and I could bring up the topic on Jesus' connection to them in the video. Thanks!
Filip Holm
Yep! Good one
Filip Holm
Absolutely!

(1) More about Sufi music, especially contemporary Sufi genres like Sufi rock (2) Something about New Age spirituality (historical roots and influences)

I the the satanic verses and the author getting stabbed in an important topic currently. I tried looking up info on the topic and all I found were partisan points of views and were not very insightful

Hi Philip. Your videos really are fascinating and very professionally done. I look forward to them each time. What I think would be really cool is if you could do something about G.I. Gurdjieff, P.D. Ouspensky and J.G. Bennett.

4, Travel. Have you thought about leading a group of people to the Middle East to learn about Islam? It could be fascinating and I think many would be interested. You could start at the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, and move around holy sites. It could also include archaeological sites and artistic heritage, maybe even a trip to Iran. You could partner with reputable travel companies like Far Horizons or National Geographic or American Archaeological Institute.

3. Christian mysticism and the spiritual practices of the Christian wisdom traditions (spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius, various forms of prayer including heychasm and centering prayer, icon visualization, meditation, ). It would be interesting to compare them with spiritual practices of other religions. One reason so many people have drifted away from Christianity is that churches do not offer the concrete spiritual practices that so many enjoy in Buddhism and other eastern traditions.

Different philosophical schools of Hinduism namely - Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Samkhya, Yoga, Mimansa, Vedanta and sub-schools within them like shaiv, Vashnav, shaktya and Nath. I know you already covered little bit of vedanta under Shankara's and Ramanuja's episode but there is lot more to cover in Hinduism.

Another suggestion is also the internal differences between the major religions e.g the schism between catholic and orthodox, the essense of the 15th century reformations (i.e protestantism), the sunni-shia split (its history, theological differences, etc). Those are known examples but you could also apply that idea to judaism, hinduism, Buddhism, etc.
Fodool
Ooo I didn't know about the shinto episode. I'll definitely be watching that pretty soon.
Filip Holm
Already did a Shinto episode, but Confucianism is a possible candidate. Andrew already did a really great series on that, but I could always put my own spin on it, I guess!
Filip Holm
Yep, I still probably will. Nice to know that there is still interest!
Filip Holm
Definitely something I should do!

Interesting idea!
