“Bing Crosby did it best. Course you'd know more about that then me but still.” Tony took a sip of the hot toddy and let it trickle down his throat.
“I always liked Doris Day better. Course Bing was pretty big for the war effort. But I remember guys having pictures of Doris Day by their bunks right next to their girl back home.”
Tony smiled and looked up at the perfectly square jaw and blue eyes. “And who did you have by your bunk?”
“I uh...well I didn't get a bunk very often...at least not my own.”
“Aw come on you gonna tell me some poor recruit wouldn't give up his bed for THE Captain America? I find that hard to believe.”
“No it wasn't that. I just uh...” Steve's cheeks went pink and he coughed. “Bucky and me...once...well.”
“Ah.” Surprisingly enough that did nothing to wipe the grin off his face. “So what you're saying is, you never slept alone.” He chuckled to himself as the fire crackled and the soft glow from the Christmas tree cast it's hauntingly peaceful glow over the room. “Funny. I mean I always though it was you and auntie Carter?”
“Peggy was a lady. A class act down to her brown curls. Closest I ever got was that kiss. Bucky teased me about it for a week.” Steve rested his hand on Tony's chest, letting the man cuddle into his belly as they lay there, watching the snow fall outside. They weren't at the Malibu house, or even the Tower. All it had taken was Tony finding out Steve was gonna be all on his lonesome for Christmas and boom, there they were in a nice, private hunting lodge.
“I knew a girl like that. Tall redhead, all legs and sarcasm.”
“I liked Pepper.”
“Yeah.” Tony stuck out his lower lip. “So did I.”
Steve didn't respond, just started rubbing the man's chest comfortingly. The station had 50 Years of Christmas Favorites playing all night long and goodness help him, Tony had actually out his Stark phone down and not picked it up for an hour. They had a blanket draped over them, the couch was comfortable, and there was Sam's gutbuster chili recipe bubbling on the stove. There were worse Christmases to have. “I uh...I got you something.” he said softly, smiling when Tony's eyes shone like a school boy. “Not much. Had trouble trying to find something for the man who has everything.” Steve reached back behind the couch and fished a badly wrapped gift out of the duffel bag.
“Awww. Ya ol softy. You didn't have to get me anything.” He tore into the wrapper with vigor none the less. A small black velvet box lay there, and Tony looked up quizzically. When Steve didn't give him any answers, he popped it open. “Heh...for me?” He pulled out the tarnished gold locket and fluttered his eyelashes in a comical fashion. “Why Steveie! Does this mean we're going steady?”
“Open it ya jackass.”
Tony snickered to himself and popped it open. A second passed. Then his smile slowly fell. “Where...” tears rested on the bottom rim of his eyes, threatening to spill over. “Where did you find this?”
“It was in the SHIELD archives.” He said, now wanting to elaborate on the archives regarding the assassination of Tony's parents for multiple reasons. Now he felt like this might have been a stupidly bad idea! “I saw it and...I thought it oughta be yours.” His mouth suddenly went dry. “Is it...I'm sorry it...if it brings up bad memories I can...” Steve reached for the locket and Tony smacked his hand back.
“No.” Tony wiped his eyes with the back of his sleeve, looking down at his mothers portrait from when she had still been a young woman and the small lock of hair taped to the opposite side. “No, it's perfect.” He leaned up and pulled Steve down, touching his lips in a tender kiss. “Merry Christmas Rogers.”
Steve breathed the tension out of his chest. “Merry Christmas, Stark.”
