JUNE 1/2 Update: IWBWTR, Animation pitch Update
🕑 Added 2025-06-15 09:18:27 +0000 UTCHey everyone! Welcome to the June update! This month I uploaded two IWBTWR comics, with one comic being a much deeper/complicated one than usual.
There's also more updates to the animation pitch im working on for Princess Bento, I'll be going to LA to talk to a producer about it next month as well!
Lets get right to it!
IWBTWR
IWBTWR has always had a weird identity crisis when it was first written. It started as a newspaper format with a heavy slice of life element. However as the series progressed, it started become clear that the "retail" slice of life gimmick was really overused and I vibed more with the cultual commentary it had in the background.
Eventually it started to develop it's own identity about asian identity in the modern world. I realised that the perspetive from a native Hong Konger is really unique because of how Hong Kong culture has permeated so much into western culture. The understanding of "chinese" culture in the western world was less from the north, but more geared towards the south, where a majority cantonese dysphoria lived.
Chinese food, kung fu cinema, interactions in Chinatown in the western world was heavily made by immigrants from Hong Kong. Only recently, the north has started to project it's soft power in our stead.
"Here Be Sea Monsters" 3 chapters I aim to lay out the ground work for a foundation in the series. Starting from Zoey's grandfather who originates from Guangzhou, where I decended from with my own family, as my own grandfather fled his hometown as the communists started to take control over China. Lots of cantonese fled overseas as well, as the rivals to the communists, the KMT had their HQ in Canton, with their origins set by the father of modern China, Sun Yat Sen.
Writing something so close to home and something with so much historical weight to it was a massive challenge. I went out of my way to try and make it as accurate as possible to how people were dressed, and how historical events linked up to the current story. British impact on Chinese society, the KCR railway, creating this butterfly effect of why so many weird things are happening to Jenny and Zoey.
Of course, the core of the story has not changed. Which is being a young adult working retail in a society experiencing massive political changes. What I want to do is establish a context regarding these percieved supernatural forces which govern our everyday lives.

Daisy is an interesting character in the story, she's not down in the dumps like Jenny, but she also shares the same social class as Zoey.
She's ditzy but she's not completely stupid. Compared to Zoey who seems to not be comfortable in her position in life like Jenny, Daisy seems to be completely comfortable and does not hesitate to abuse her position to others less fortunate than her.
She consumes everything literally and figuratively because she can, she is perfectly content with doing so, even if it puts other people down.
Daisy is Zoey with no empathy.
Animated Pitch Update
So right now the pitch idea is as follows:
A new continent has appeared in the world (poof!)
All the countries in the world are flabbergasted and they set country representatives to explore (and maybe exploit) the new continent
In the middle of the continent lies a precious resource.
Use the precious resource as a plot device in the middle of the season; present it for exposition in first episode.
The continent hasn’t been explored at this point of time, BUT some countries have already set borders/areas (show implications of “soft” borders). Some country borders will be peaceful, while some do not (wars and conflicts).
Canada and Australia, in some way, form a temporary alliance at first.
Plot A is about Canada and Australia, Plot B is about other characters (ideally a trio)
Plot C is all about the precious resource
Plot A and Plot B are about slice-of-life
As the plot goes on, they get along with each other and become close friends.
In the middle of the plot, it is slowly revealed there IS a precious resource…..and then conflicts between countries arises
At the end of the story, everyone reaches the middle and a big fight erupts
Canada comes up on top, with the help of Australia
Mongolia and Vietnam
America and the UK with the UK being a twist villian who goes full wartime britian in the end.

I like how the "Here Be Sea Monsters" storyline serves to indirectly develop our cast. It's almost like a backstory for the historical context that shapes the culture that shapes our characters. I didn't expect it to be in three parts, so I was surprised to see Daisy again so soon. It's an interesting choice to order the story this way though, since we get a glimpse of that history and then jump forward to interactions between three characters it has inadvertently shaped in different ways (Jenny, Zoey, and Daisy). Also, good luck with the pitch! The outline seems more concrete it did a couple posts ago. Keep sharpening it and we'll wish for the best.
